Tommy has had so many other distractions to keep him from thinking too closely, or understanding, and yet looking now there are so many similarities that he can’t quite get his head around—
“What is it that makes him so different?” Tommy asks, and then again, although this time in a language that the others can understand. They’re all watching him closely, but before Tommy can reflexively apologise, he realises they’re not concerned, but curious. Assang tilts their head, Foruwua pops their lips and Lulah leans forward from her perch, catching Tommy’s eye.
“What do you know of the Blood God?” she asks , the question seemingly out of nowhere, like a distraction rather than an answer, but the steel in her amber eyes tells Tommy otherwise.

The certainty in his voice made Grian’s chest squeeze.

“They want us to take in a hybrid?”
Scar doesn’t even try to hide the surprise and confusion in his words. Staring at Cub with both eyebrows raised to his hairline.
“I thought hybrid zoos were deemed too dangerous for the public.” Scar waves a hand over in the vague direction of the zoo exhibits they do have. “Not to mention we were never intended to be that kind of zoo, why us?”
Scar was just a humble zookeeper, he wasn't prepared to deal with this pesky bird that seems much more intelligent than everyone says he should be, but he isn't one to turn down an animal in need. Grian is just happy to be somewhere where he can lay on something soft, even if the humans are weird at this facility. Especially that scarred one.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve been trapped aboard a strange ship,” he says almost idly, a smile beginning to warm his face as he compares this awful experience with his extended imprisonment aboard Xsdí’s ship, and while the memories aren’t exactly fond, he can find some sense of amusement in the fact that he’s a prisoner once more, feral like a leashed wolf that bites and tears at its restraints.
“You think I’d be better at this by now,” he half-laughs, trying to outrun the suffocating feeling cloying at his throat, the dryness in his mouth, the taste of vomit and bile that reminds him too closely of pod food and the near-untethered thoughts of sharp teeth and the soft flesh of his wrists. Nook’s metal, cold, pressed against his forehead is a good anchor, even if the sharp edge of twisted metal threatens to break his skin.
Or: The Humans want answers. Tommy isn’t sticking around to give them.
