If he were more used to his prosthetic, or his new lack of depth perception, perhaps he would have seen the dish rag on the floor a moment sooner. Perhaps he would have picked it up, sidestepped it, or simply walked over it, and all of this could have been avoided.
Instead, he steps directly on it, slips, and falls toward the kitchen counter head-first.
He tries to grab for the counter, but his hand slips, and he’s sent careening into the wall. He hears the impact before he really feels it. A sharp crack resonates inside his skull, and then his neck shakes involuntarily. He slumps against the wall, slowly leaning to the side, and then falls to the floor with a dull thunk.

“A Hero,” he’d told the man. “You protected us today, and you did it because you wanted to. You’re a Hero.”
