Summary
“What do you want, Rozanov?”
Once upon a time, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov had been something of fated rivals. And then. Rozanov's national team crashed and burned in the 2014 Olympics in his own country. Shortly thereafter, he requested a trade to a Canadian team without much explanation, and by the end of the season, he was playing for Ottawa. Years of buildup and progress thrown away. The rivalry lost its luster after that, with Rozanov hardly a competition.
Now, Rozanov was looking at Shane as if they shared a private joke. “I have, ah, Marly, what's the word? Proposition? Proposal?”
“Business offer,” groaned Marlow, drawing his eyebrows together.
“That,” Rozanov smirked. “Let's sit down, Hollander. Hear me out.”

Or: Shane and Ilya never started hooking up. Several years into their career, some things are very different. At an All-Star game, the only out and proud player in the MLH approaches Shane with the suggestion to start a charity together. It's the beginning of something life changing.

Summary
Ilya’s post-game interview was playing, anger and frustration manifesting in the way he chewed on his lip and glared at the camera. Sweat rolled down the sides of his forehead, trickling down the bare chest he so loved to show off as he answered questions from the reporters. Every question about his mental state, how it felt to lose, was met with a one word answer that was bitten off before Ilya could bite them instead.
Shane was already hard again.
Cursing, he went to clean off his hand, mind wandering to the bet he and Ilya made. The beautiful, wonderful, glorious bet Shane won.

This was what tended to scare Shane the most, when Ilya was unwell: the gradual loss of him, despite being physically there. He would go quiet, blank, slow to speak and slow to respond, nothing like the pulse of intense energy and liveliness that sparked in him at his baseline. Shane missed him, when he was away in that place. It was not a place Ilya could always describe, and it was not somewhere Shane could rescue him from, or even join him in for company. So Shane waited, every time, for him to come back. He always came back. That was the only relief in it.

It's the start of Shane's first Centaur season and Shane and Ilya are engaged. As awful as last year had been for Shane (what with Shane getting kicked off the metros and beat up by two teammates, along with finding out Ilya had a major depressive episode without his knowledge), this new year is supposed to the best year yet. Ilya and Shane can hardly wait to play on the same team and win the cup, to be married this summer, and start the rest of their lives together. Ilya and Shane can hardly wait to be married this summer, no seriously, they. can't. wait.

"Stay," Rozanov said. It sounded like pleading. That trick had worked on him, once.
“Why?" Shane's tone was more biting than he intended. "What do you think is going to happen if I stay? Are you gonna make me a goddamned tuna melt?”
Rozanov, to his credit, took the words like the blow they were. His eyes widened, then he covered his face with his palms and muttered something in Russian.
Shane had never seen shame written across those features before.
In April 2017, Shane Hollander suffers the most painful not-breakup he’ll ever experience. Months later, he's outed. Two years after that, a broken knee ends his career.
When Rozanov unexpectedly crosses Shane's path four years later, Shane resolves to be courteous yet keep his distance. But Ilya is just as beautiful and charming as he ever was, and he’s determined to give what they'd once shared a second chance. A real chance.
It's a bad idea. Shane knows it's a bad idea.

Ilya thinks about the last night they spent together, thinks about Shane splayed out on a hotel mattress pleading for his touch, thinks about how they hadn’t even kissed, and it starts as a strange little tickle in the back of his throat. Barely-there. He could ignore it if he wanted.
Then the intensity grows, flourishes into full-blow irritation, and suddenly he’s sputtering on his Coke and attracting the attention of the woman in the first-class seat across the aisle from him. He thinks it’s just some odd coughing fit, or that he inhaled his soda on accident, so he’s shocked when he feels something soft and smooth and triangular against his tongue.
It’s not until he spits the object into the napkin he’d received with his drink that he can see what it is: a long, thin, green leaf. A sepal.
As soon as Ilya realizes what he’s looking at, he’s flooded with dread.
Ilya's known these feelings were doomed from the start. He never thought they'd literally kill him.

Ilya looked up at him then. His eyebrows were slightly furrowed, his jaw tight. Something was going unsaid.
Is he asking me for permission?
Honestly, Shane wanted to tell him no. Ilya going to that party felt like a waste of their time together, and they got so little of it. Still, if he really wanted to go, Shane wouldn't stop him.
"Did you want to go or something?" Shane asked. He pulled the pillow out of his lap. His feet had been tucked under his legs, so he moved them to be flat on the ground. "I could stay here, I guess. Or head back to—"
"I want you to go too. I want you to come with me to the party."
