Things like this didn't happen to other people; Shane knew that. He’d been alive long enough to experience the confused glances and exasperated scoffs that always accompanied his discomfort with things other people didn't even notice. He would not fuck this up – not because he couldn't handle the way the sheets touched his skin. The burning of his skin spread to his eyes as his vision blurred. He squeezed his eyes shut and scrubbed his hands over his face. He would not cry.
The tears fell hot and silent. They pooled at the curve of his jaw and around his chin, puddles of shame and self-contempt. Fucking breathe, he told himself, as he turned the faucet of the shower as far as it could go.
He stood watching the water pool around his feet and slip down the drain until he heard Ilya stir. At first, he wasn't sure if he had really heard his name.
“Shane?… Shane?”
He wanted to yell back, assure Ilya everything was fine, but when he opened his mouth, only a squeak escaped.
“Moya lyubov?”
He cleared his throat and tried again: “In here.”

“I just want to feel your forehead, okay?” Ilya spoke softly, like Shane was a fawn easily spooked.
He shook his head frantically, then brought his hands up to fist his hair when the motion exacerbated the throbbing. “N-no,” he breathed, “not sick. no point.” His sense of control was really fraying now, and Ilya could sense it.
“Moya lyubov, you act like skittish cat. Is no big deal then. If you are not sick, then there is nothing to hide, yes?”
Maybe it was the way he spoke to him so tenderly, or the throbbing in his head and the aching in his bones, but the next time Ilya reached for him, he didn't pull away.
When the strong, calloused hand found his forehead and Ilya inhaled sharply, Shane held his breath for what he knew came next.
“Jesus, you are burning!” his boyfriend cried, prompting Shane to once again shrink away.
“Nuh-uh,” he grumbled. “Don't get sick, remember?”

Shane suddenly remembered that Lisa was a doctor at a children’s hospital. He had a sinking feeling that it couldn’t be a good sign that she was talking to him using what he suspected was her doctor voice.
“It’s just a bad stomachache,” Shane told her.
He opened his mouth again to tell her that he’d had worse, but closed it when he realized that actually, that definitely wasn't true. He hadn’t ever felt anything like this. In fact, he was starting to think that breaking his collarbone again would be preferable to his current situation.

“If the plums are good, we will get them,” he assures her and she smiles in relief.
“Kay Daddy.” She goes back to looking at the numerous, colorful brands of cereal around them in the aisle. Shane sighs, one hand pressed against the underside of his swollen belly as a barrage of movement steals his focus momentarily.
He’s so distracted by the movement of their baby within, that it takes him a second to realize the gentle presence of his daughter has disappeared from his side. He turns, so quickly that it makes his hip muscles pull uncomfortably, trying to spot her in the aisle.
His heart lodges in his throat when he realizes she is no longer even in the same aisle.
“Ren?” he chokes out, feet moving in the direction of the aisle’s edge, hoping to god she’s somewhere extremely nearby and he’s just missing her. The hurried waddle to the end of the aisle feels like it takes an eternity, his heart racing, sweat beading on his forehead, pulse stuttering.
Fuck, what is she wearing right now? What color is her shirt? Oh, fuck, what if he has to tell the police what she was last seen in? What if he- what if she’s-

Summary
It wasn't that Ilya'd never seen Shane sick before, or helped him through it. Well, maybe not in their early years. A younger Shane would probably die before letting Ilya notice he wasn't feeling well. Ilya wasn't much better, back then.
But being married and living in the same house (fucking finally) left little space for hiding things like that from each other. While Ilya was still working on letting Shane take care of him when hurting, old ghosts of his past slowly fading away against Shane's tender worrying, his husband was actually a pretty good patient. Aside from the hating-being-sick part, Shane mainly just got a little bossy and a lot clingy when not feeling good. He craved physical comfort in a way Ilya happily obliged.
It was just that he absolutely suffered through whatever illness he had, and Ilya had never seen him this sick before.
Or: Shane suffers at the hands of a suspicious chicken sandwich. Ilya suffers alongside him. He's somehow still incredibly perfect at taking care of him.
