“I don’t feel better,” she says, eyes fixed on the garden. She could’ve taken better care of it, figured out all the machines Chujin used to keep the Dunes from encroaching again, watered the flowers and pruned the dead branches. She wouldn’t know where to start, now. Chujin never taught her. She never asked. It’d never be the same, even if he did. “I wish he’d never left me that damn message.”
The minute it escapes, Ceroba wants to take it back, but she can’t. Star takes the beer from her hands as the aluminum crumples in her claws. She lets him, her head bowed and her shoulders shaking. “He knew me. He knew me, didn’t he? And he still- and he still… what’d he think I could do? That he couldn’t? That the finest minds of monsterkind couldn’t?”
“I don’t think we’ll ever know,” Star says, quietly.
(In the months and years after Clover's sacrifice, Ceroba Ketsukane finds her tomorrows.)
