Since John had moved into Sherlock's flat, he had been eating more than he used to. With his previous war diet, he wasn't able to eat till he was full during meal times. Now that he was no longer in the army, he was able to adapt his eating habits to fit his regular life. With this, Sherlock watched him eat to make sure John would eat enough and to his fullest.
