Summary
Khaslana sucks in a breath. “Wait–”
It’s too late. Curious fingers gently stroke the base of his left wing.
Every muscle in Khaslana’s body locks up tight at once. His wing immediately twitches beneath the touch, cautious as it is, a small and uncontrollable jerk of sensitivity.
He can’t help the faint, shocked noise that leaves him, barely audible.
Phainon makes a low, intrigued sound, and adds two more of his fingers. With every digit but his thumb, he starts at the sharp tip of the base and slides up and outwards.
A great shudder wracks through his wing from base to tip, a wave that follows in the wake of Phainon’s palm, and it ricochets all the way until it returns to Khaslana’s back and shivers through the rest of him. A bright, quaking warmth begins to pool in his chest.
Oh.

Khaslana’s wings are sensitive. This is a problem until it suddenly, miraculously, isn’t.

A merman injured and down on his luck, Phainon is caught by poachers and put up in an underground auction. The man that purchases him is not what he expected.
“I’m Nanook of Adlivun,” the human says from the other side of the tank’s glass. “What’s your name?”
Phainon gives him a cold look, lips sealed. Since these humans want to hear his voice, he won’t give it to them. The human has got some nerve, asking something of Phainon when he’s keeping him chained and caged in this glass box.
Nanook shrugs. “I’ll just call you Fishy then.”

As he steps forward, the silence around him is deafening. All eyes turn to him; a few gasps like sharp cracks break the air.
“That is… if you will have me.”
Khaslana takes another step, his heart beating like a drum in his chest. His face hardens, his jaw sets, before he drops onto his knees.
“Your Majesty,” he whispers, each syllable forced through his teeth as he lowers his gaze onto the blood-soaked ground. From the corner of his eye, he can see his brother struggling in the man’s hold.
“Khas—” Phainon's voice cuts off, silenced by the hand on his neck. Khaslana inhales deeply, lowers his head, then presses his forehead into the dirt.
“Please, King of Adlivun, the Blemished one. Take my life instead of my brother’s.”
Khaslana, a fierce warrior of Aedes Elysiae, offers himself to the tyrant of Adlivun to save his younger brother. Initially filled with hatred and defiance, Khaslana expects Nanook to be a cruel man. Instead, he is surprised to find a thriving kingdom and a king loved by his people.

Summary
AU: King Nanook demands Phainon’s hand in marriage in exchange for an alliance with Adlivun that Amphoreus desperately needs. Amphoreus declines but, determined to save his country, Phainon sneaks out and rides to Adlivun's Imperial Palace.
Khaslana is a pragmatic person, always making the sensible choice. He would never risk starting a war against the overwhelming might of the Adlivun Empire.
Which doesn’t explain why there is currently a giant hole in the roof where Phainon is having dinner with King Nanook, discussing the marriage alliance between their countries. A hole that Khaslana created when he entered via said roof, sword first, punching through it as if it were made of paper.
“Khas! What are you doing?”
“Phainon,” Khaslana says, in the deadened emotionless tone that means he’s passed fucking furious and come clean out the other side. “Come. Here. Now.”

Phainon snarls, pushing against the crushing weight pinning him to the desk — the edge of it biting into his stomach, a cruel reminder of the mistake he’s made.
“Answer me, boy.”
“Fuck you.”
A low chuckle follows, soft and almost amused. There’s a danger in it, one that rolls through Nanook’s chest and bleeds into the air between them. Heavy. Inevitable.
Lips brush his ear in a mockery of intimacy.
“This is my fault,” Nanook whispers, breath landing hot against his skin, “I gave you too much freedom.”
Phainon stills beneath him, jaw clenched, muscles screaming.
“I will take responsibility for your arrogance, Phainon, and teach you what it means to overstep.”
Nanook breaks Phainon apart, then puts him back together. Again, and again, and again.
