The answer was right in front of me all along. I sometimes wonder if that was literally true, if someone or something out there was actually trying to tell me something, but that’s not really important anymore. The answer was butterfly wings. You know that saying, a butterfly flaps its wings in Hong Kong and there’s a tornado in New York? Very tiny differences can have really big results. That’s what I needed to do. Not big things. Incremental changes. A nudge here, a push there. Minor alterations, far away from what I actually wanted to change.

“Sooooo” said Bow into the sudden silence. “Is this some sort of elaborate plan to murder us then?” Catra snorted.
“I think we’re all getting a little too old for that shit, don’t you? No, no, the message I sent was real.” She certainly looked older. There was grey in her fur now, though it had only been three years since they’d last seen her. She wore an unfamiliar grey and red uniform, with a pistol and a knife buckled at her belt. Her hair was long again, tied back in braids, and her eyes were tired.
“Then what do you want?” asked Glimmer, stepping into the room. “Not that it isn’t nice to learn you’re still alive and all.”
“I told you Sparkles” said Catra, flicking her ears. “The Crimson Claws are interested in joining your Coalition. We’re willing to offer our full support against Horde Prime, access to our intelligence network, basing and resupply rights, military coordination—everything. I just have one condition.”
“Oh?” said Glimmer, stretching her fingers in case she needed to let loose a blast of magic or teleport herself and Bow back to the ship. But Catra didn’t attack. She just looked straight at her and said very quietly
“I want you to tell me how Adora died.”

Star Wars is nothing if not a tale of triumvirates. Three pieces of a whole inadvertently shaping the course of the Galaxy during key points in time.
Sometimes these triumvirates weather the buffering gale of fate unbroken, steadfast in their resolve and vanquishing the Spectre of evil conspiring in the shadows. Ushering in a new era of peace for all of the Galaxy to bask under.
Sometimes these triumvirates break, split into different pieces and collapse into a wave of agony and despair until nothing but flickering embers of hope remain.
And sometimes, after the dust has settled and the blood has cooled. When life has moved on and nothing remains but the tattered vestiges of better days and happier nights, sometimes these triumvirates find their way back together.

Summary
They stay that way for a long time, Catra’s face tucked into Adora’s shoulder, Adora gently cradling Catra’s head. Adora is careful not to hug Catra too hard or make her feel restrained, anticipating the moment that Catra will start to pull away — but Catra doesn’t. She hangs on so tightly it hurts, her claws digging through Adora’s jacket and into her back, latching into her like she did when she was a kitten and didn’t know how much her claws could hurt. Adora tries not to wince, tries not to move a single muscle, worried that if she does the spell will break and Catra will struggle away, appalled at having shown weakness.
But Catra doesn’t let go. And so neither does Adora.

The type of grief that settles like a blanket over your mind. The one that assimilates itself into your every thought and emotion. The type of grief that isn’t just the mourning of something lost, but rather the birth of a new facet of who you are.
The type of grief our two star crossed lovers are doomed to feel when either one passes into the veil and leaves the other behind.
A toast to Clarke and Lexa, doomed to pine for their lost halves across the Multiverse.
