Summary
"It’s new, yes, and terrifying, but I feel a changed man, steady and bright. Oh, how your magic thrills me.”
Todd folded the paper up once again and looked up, eyes searching. They found Neil’s, locking, asking some sort of question, and Neil almost forgot how to breathe. His heart was pounding rapidly, almost painfully so. Incredible. That was incredible.
Todd’s eyes finally left his as the other boys gathered around him, cheering. The light of the fire danced across his face.
“Todd Anderson, everybody!” Charlie cheered. “What a man! A czar of romance, if I do say so myself.”
“Yeah, Todd, tell the people who that lovely sonnet was about!” Meeks clapped him on the back.
“Not a sonnet, idiot,” Knox cut in. “All the same, who’s the lucky girl, Todd?”
Oh.
If Neil hadn’t been able to breathe before, he sure couldn’t now. He’d been so lost in the language. He hadn’t even considered the clear implications.
“A summer love?” Knox proposed eagerly.
“Something like that," Todd said quickly, and Neil's stomach dropped.

Todd reads one of his own poems aloud for the first time at a meeting. Neil, convinced it's for a girl, spirals.

Summary
“Best friends,” Eddie repeats the words like they're foreign. Like he’s never heard them before.
“Yeah, you know that,” Buck insists, he’s tempted to reach out, wants to pull Eddie into him, but he’s not sure if that would help or hurt right now. “We’re BuckandEddie,” he adds for good measure. That’s what everyone always says. It’s an easy answer when they’re acting ways that others deem bizarre.
Eddie is silent, seemingly processing what Buck just said. He can’t be sure, but Buck feels like he just failed some test he didn’t know he was taking. That was not the right answer.
“What exactly do you think we’re doing here, Buck?” He demands, gaze steely as he finally meets Buck’s eye. His tone is so cold it sends a shiver down Buck’s spine. Do you know how much Christopher misses you? How could you? You’re not around. All traces of golden syrupy warmth from earlier in the afternoon are gone. “Are you fucking all of your best friends bare?”
or,
Buck and Eddie are having platonic best friend sex. Buck's sure of it.

Summary
This is all perfectly applicable to friendship. Friendships require effort. Intentionality. Sometimes you have to watch a minute long Instagram video about attracting men to figure out how to get your male best friend to come back to your house and fall asleep on your couch again. Or in your bed. Either one.
Whatever Buck's comfortable with. Eddie's not picky.
Eddie will take whatever proximity Buck is willing to offer and be grateful for it, and if that sounds desperate then fine, it's a little desperate, but it's friend-desperate, which is a completely different thing than regular desperate.
He replays the video and takes mental notes, formulating a plan that is simple: get Buck's attention. Spend more time with Buck. Stop feeling like his ribcage has been hollowed out with a melon baller every time he goes forty-eight hours without hearing Buck laugh.
Easy and straightforward. He’s got this.
Or,
Five times Eddie tries to show Buck how much he misses him; plus the one time he just says it.Series

Summary
The boyfriend looks at Eddie's arm, looks at Eddie's face, does whatever math drunk people do when they're deciding whether a fight is worth it, and somehow arrives at the correct answer. He grabs maybe-horse-Ashley by the elbow and pulls her away, muttering something about firefighters that Buck doesn't catch because he's too busy trying not to pass out.
Eddie turns around. His hand is still on Buck's chest.
"Seriously?" One eyebrow up. Not angry yet, but getting there. "We've been here an hour."
"He came at me!" Buck throws his hands up. Outraged. Innocent. An absolute victim of circumstance and nothing more. "I was just talking to her."
"You were practically on top of her."
"That's just how I talk to people, Eddie. I'm a leaner. It's my thing."
Eddie stares at him for a second. His hand drops from Buck's chest and he shakes his head, turning back to the bar.
"Get yourself a drink," Eddie says over his shoulder. "And stay out of trouble for five minutes."
He makes it roughly eleven minutes before he does something stupid again.
Or,
Buck is completely normal about Eddie shoving Blue to defend his honor. Really. He is.Series

Summary
“Eddie, I’m in love with you,” he says, heart thrumming in his chest, in his throat, in his mouth. He feels hot and cold and dizzy by turns.
“What?” asks Eddie faintly, barely even a question.
“I’m in love with you,” Buck says again. “I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to, but I am. I am.”
“You– Right, okay,” says Eddie, so visibly buffering that it makes Buck’s heart clench a little in his chest. Of course he’s in love with Eddie. How could he possibly have let himself pretend otherwise. “Wasn’t expecting this, bud,” says Eddie, and he sounds so shocked that Buck can’t help a wry smile. Of course Eddie’s surprised. They must be the only two people in existence who didn’t already know. “I– Buck, man, you know that I care about you, but…”
“I know,” he says gently to Eddie, because he did know, but that doesn't make this moment hurt any less.
---
Post season 8, Buck confesses his feelings, Eddie lets him down as gently as he can, and they both try to figure out how to be just friends.

Summary
“I’ll be right back,” Eddie says, as his eyes snap to something over Buck’s shoulder. “Stay here with Chris.”
Eddie presses a firm kiss to Buck's lips before ducking off into the crowd, and Buck watches him go with a dazed look on his face.
“You guys are kissing now?” Chris asks curiously. “I didn’t think he’d told you yet.”
That drags Buck back to reality.
“Huh?” he says. “Told me what?”
Chris raises an eyebrow. “Dad’s told you how he feels, right?”
“It’s just been the kissing actually,” Buck admits, still a little out of it. “I don’t think he’s fully aware he’s doing it?”

Summary
Dragging a hand down his face, Eddie says, “It was thirty seconds.”
“Of betrayal,” Buck says darkly.
A laugh bursts out of Eddie. “You’re–”
“I’m what?” Buck advances on him before stopping abruptly in the middle of the room. Behind him, the curry they’d been working on sizzles, oil burning. Neither of them does anything about it. “I’m right?”
“Jumping to conclusions,” Eddie grits out. He hates being cornered like this. “Like you always do.”
“Oh, okay,” Buck says, too brightly. “Same way you keep jumping through hoops to avoid saying anything you actually want to fucking say?”
Buck’s not being fair. None of this is fair. It’s not right, it’s not–
“Fuck you,” Eddie snaps.

Summary
“I want all of this, Eddie. I want a home and a family and I— maybe I can’t have it while I’m sleeping on my best friend’s couch.”
The idea of Buck finding someone else, of him going anywhere further than their living room, sat like a brick in Eddie’s gut. Was he so desperate to escape? Could he see it, written all over Eddie’s face? The shift Eddie had been pointedly not looking at since he returned to LA.
“We are your family.”
“I need to learn to—”
“If you say stand on your own two feet one more time, Buck, I swear!”
Buck heaved a sigh, put upon and irritated, “Well, what’s so wrong with that?”
“We’ve fucking been alone, Buck. Me and you, all our lives, we’ve been doing it alone. You grew up alone. I did too. You don’t need to learn how to be alone, you need to learn how to lean on the people who are offering you their shoulder.”
OR -
An 8x18 epilogue/fix-it. Buck and Eddie fight, a few truths come to light and they learn how to lean on each other again.

Summary
“So…” he drags out the word, long and languid, taking another pull from his bottle. Pushes harder. “That’d be okay with you?”
“What would?”
“If I… you know, brought someone here?” Buck drapes his arm over the back of the couch, expectant. Eager for Eddie’s answer.
Eddie just shrugs.
So Buck shoves. “Maybe we need to make some rules?”
“Rules?” Now Eddie’s frowning.
“Y-yeah. Or, like, a system. For… guests?”
Eddie’s eyes narrow in confusion and then widen. He chokes a little, coughs, and when he speaks, his voice has dropped an octave, husky at the edges. “What’d you have in mind?”
or: Buck and Eddie implement a system for sexiling each other. Except it only works if you respect the system.

Summary
Buck watches him, something bitter and almost wounded flashing across his face before it hardens again. “Would it have been easier if it was a woman?” he asks quietly. “If it was some petite, feminine figure with her knees pinned up, getting fucked so hard I made her forget her own name—”
“Buck.”
Buck leans in until Eddie can feel the heat off his body, smell the alcohol on his breath, the unfamiliar cologne lingering on his collar. “Or is that what’s eating at you? That it wasn’t a woman? That it was a guy, but it just wasn’t you.”
Or,
Buck calls Eddie out on his shit.Series

Summary
It’s not just the mask.
It’s Buck looming over him trying to look at the menu in Eddie’s hands at the same time while they’re in line at the coffee shop. It’s the power in his coiled muscle as he lifts with Chimney at work. It’s the idea of doe eyes and snark and Can I be the helpless victim?
And in Eddie’s version, there’s no grisly garage door ending or huge sharp knives. No, he would bargain his way out another way. It would work on his preferred predator, no problem.

Summary
The crowd is denser than when they first got here, the music is loud, and Eddie feels old. Well, not old, exactly, but a little out of his element.
When the hell did that happen?
To be fair, it’s been a couple years since he’s been out like this. Not that he’s ever really been out like this before—with the sole intention to get laid. But he can't see himself getting on the apps like Buck and Ravi, so his only option is in person. Which brings them here. Tonight.
Maybe he should have gotten them a round of shots, too, just to take the edge off a bit.
A night out doesn't go to plan, leaving Eddie frustrated but not understanding why.

He can barely bring himself to open his eyes. When he finally manages to find the courage, he sees Ravi looking at him with eager anticipation.

Summary
For the last several months, Eddie has been working on dismantling the self-erected barriers about what he believes he does, and does not, deserve. He’s been attempting to teach himself it is unnecessary to sip joy from the cup like it’s a finite resource; that he can swallow it in huge mouthfuls, that he can drain the cup until it’s completely empty; that all that happens under those circumstances is the creation of more space, more space for the joy to flood in and fill up, again and again.
It’s a tricky balance. Some experiments are more successful than others.

Eddie felt like he was losing his grip on reality.
“Why are you suddenly doing this?”
“Doing what?”
“I think Dad's talking about how you’re acting like the football coach at my school,” Chris supplied helpfully.
Buck ducked his head.
“Well, you know, I just don't want to make anyone uncomfortable.”
“For the record, you saying “no homo” about getting takeout is making me very uncomfortable,” Eddie said.

Summary
“You got hard,” Eddie says simply. “I saw it…” Then, with this purse of his mouth, this raise of his eyebrows. “I felt it.”
“Jesus.” Buck can’t breathe. He stumbles a few steps back and ends up on a wall, still staring at Eddie, in his bedroom, looking shadowed and sinuous. “That doesn’t… okay, what is going on here, Eddie?”
“You tell me,” Eddie answers, all husky, and fuck—it roars through Buck, builds in the center of him until he’s on fire.
This isn’t normal. This isn’t Eddie, and yet, Buck’s throat is dry, and his dick is hard, and all he can think is that he wants it. All he can think is that he doesn’t know how to fight this. Doesn’t know how to say no to it.
All he can think is that he wants Eddie.
