Gotham was a depressing and gloomy place full of depressing and gloomy people. At the ripe age of eight, he had to learn how to fight just to survive; it was a sudden and jarring change that Dick had no choice but to adapt to.
Despite the bad, he grew to call Gotham home. He made friends and acquired a (not-so-legal) job that allowed him to help other kids like him, kids with no one and nowhere to go.
He was surviving moment by moment, but he had his best friend by his side, and he was finally getting close to getting revenge on the man who killed his parents.
When another unexpected tragedy breaks the fragile life he had managed to cobble together, he finds himself on the run from the cops, his employer, and — most unfortunately — the Bats.

He reached out, slowly, and brushed his hand against Parrot's wings. The former king swore he could feel an icy shiver run up where his fingers passed. With a start, Parrot jerked his wings back, flinching away from him as if he had been burned by the touch, and repositioned himself to keep Wifies fully in his line of sight.
"I would have never done this to you," he continued. "I would've never let that happen to you. You know that."
"BUT YOU STILL HURT ME!" Parrot screamed, and his wings flared out to their full span behind him, forming an imposing wall of green, blue, red, and orange feathers.
OR: basically Saps torturing Parrot when he lost to the point where he lowkey went crazy and hallucinated about Wifies.
OR: My version of events about the ending of Parrot's Civil War: The Finale, because it's never enough angst. This whole thing was written 'cause people kept saying he was gonna hallucinate about Wifies, so here I am, making that happen.

For months, Buck has been professionally harassed over dispatch by one infuriatingly calm operator with a smug voice, a superiority complex, and a deeply concerning habit of calling him sweetheart over an active emergency line.
Buck hates him.
Obviously.
Then he meets Eddie Diaz in person and unfortunately discovers that the smug voice comes with stupidly nice hands, unfair eye contact, and a thirteen-year-old son who immediately decides Buck is his problem now.
Worse, Eddie gets weirdly possessive every time someone else looks at Buck too long.
Worse than that, Buck likes it.
And when a bad call turns into a building collapse and Eddie has to listen to Buck trapped beneath it over an open dispatch line, suddenly none of it feels like a joke anymore.
Or: Buck and Eddie fall in love while arguing over city emergency communications, and literally everyone is tired of them.
