Alhaitham studied the flush of Kaveh's cheeks, his unrelenting gaze. "I see," he said.
Alhaitham grows his hair out. He has been growing his hair out since they were students. It falls to his hips in a river of silver and green. Kaveh looks, and looks, and looks.

‘Congratulations.’ Diluc said, a little more formal this time. ‘I’m happy for you.’
The two of them remained standing there awkwardly, unsure of what to do. Under normal circumstances, perhaps two brothers would hug, go for a drink, discuss wedding plans…
In their case however, Kaeya had no idea what “normal” was. Just a few months ago Diluc would have thrown flames in his particular direction and told him to get out.
And yet, Kaeya was about to test the waters even further with what he was about to request next.
(Screw that, he wasn’t just testing the waters, he was actively swan-diving towards his doom.)
‘I’d like you to be there—’ he started.
‘I’d like that.’ Diluc replied, not even allowing Kaeya to finish his sentence.
‘…as my best man.’
If the silence from before had been unbearable, this one was positively murderous. Kaeya could practically feel his soul leaving his body, floating all the way up to Celestia, only to be denied and thrown into the Abyss instead.
‘...Okay.’

Kaeya turned while still on the ground, aiming to thrust the blade into the beasts stomach and send his viscera spilling, but the beast stopped just shy of the point and grabbed the sword in one black-gloved hand, hauling it out of his grip with ease. Kaeya went tumbling forward as a consequence, just barely managing to catch himself on a knee.
“As I said: you’ll get your month here, like the others,” said the beast as he stepped in a slow circle around Kaeya, impassive as ever. He gave the sword a swing as he walked and Kaeya barely managed to restrain a flinch at the sound of it cutting the air. “If you still wish to fight, you’ll have an opportunity at the end. But I don’t advise it. You’ll just make your death slower.”
Kaeya walks willingly into the den of the beast and soon finds himself with an ultimatum: break his curse or die.

And what a fun little kick to the gut that is, the realization that not only had he been played by all sides, but he's also being tossed aside like trash now that his use had run its course.
It’s not that Childe doesn’t get it. He’s a Harbinger. He knows first-hand what it means to do his duty, to put the mission first and his personal feelings far, far away, preferably locked up in a box, where it wouldn’t interfere with his job. He knows what it’s like working with vipers, to scheme and plot and lie in wait for the opportune moment to stab his opponent in the back.
But this time, this time Childe can’t help but feel a little (a lot) gutted.
Stupid. He’s gotten himself stupidly attached.
