It has been almost a year since Maria had seen her son in person. She wanted to enjoy him for a little longer. When Howard mentions needing to make a quick stop at the Pentagon on their way to the Bahamas, Maria decided she'd rather go to dinner with Tony and leave the next day. She and Tony left the mansion first in one of Howard's cars. Howard left second shortly after.

1991 begins with Peggy Carter's husband embracing his retirement in the back garden of their family home on Fordway Road, and ends with a crashed car, SHIELD in turmoil, and a ghost wearing a face that has haunted Peggy Carter for over forty years.

Steve Rogers thought he was done with Hydra. Done with its many heads and even more of its secrets. He was finally ready to settle down in the modern day of technology and food delivered right to your door (God bless) and even moreso he thought he was finally ready to move on from Bucky. He'd managed to settle into a comfortable relationship with a tech billionaire and a former pilot, he'd started a schedule of visiting the cemetery and replacing the flowers on graves every Sunday, he'd even started going to church the way old Mr.Crawford used to tell him to.
But after discovering an old Hydra base in Jersey operating out of S.H.I.E.L.D's first headquarters, everything started to unravel.
Now old ghosts were sitting in his living room, history is starting to rewrite itself, and Hydra just keeps getting worse the more Steve learns about the 1980s.

“Gorbachev wanted the target contained before he reaches Moscow. So he sent The Winter Soldier, the world’s most deadly assassin,” King T’Chaka replied.
The Soldier exited the plane, glancing at Peggy for a moment before continuing on. Time seemed to slow down as their eyes met. His eyes were cold as he stared at her without a trace of recognition. If it weren’t for the blue in them she knew belonged only to Steve’s best friend, she wouldn’t have known it was him either.
“It looks just like him, Howard. Just like Bucky,” Peggy murmured.
“I’d heard the rumors, but even if they’re true, the man we knew is long gone, Peg. And we have bigger fish to fry.” Howard stared after the man who was now swiftly moving away.
