Summary
Ever since Dess disappeared, Noelle's relationship with Kris has been strained at best, and completely distant at worst, but she can't seem to figure out why. She wants nothing more than to reconnect with them, but she also wants to respect their boundaries. She just can't seem to get rid of this aching void she feels in her chest whenever she thinks about them. And then Susie moves into town. Susie is holding hands with a boy. Noelle wonders why she’s dreaming about this.
Susie falls to her knees and clutches Kris’ limp body and she keeps holding hands with the boy, the boy that looks like Kris’ brother. Noelle thinks absently that this is a scarier dream than she’s ever had, and that Kris’ blood is matting in Susie’s hair as she tries to find their heartbeat.
Then Susie stands up, and Noelle knows with absolute certainty that Susie is going to kill her. Kris’ face reflects in Susie’s axe as she swings it back, and in the split second before Noelle blacks out, there is still an expression lingering on their face. Relief.

Summary
Many years after her disappearance, December Holiday returns. But she isn’t the same, and she isn’t whole. Her body is twisted by her time in the dark, leaving her all but chained to it. She and her mother need Kris’ help to return her to the way she was and thwart the Angel’s Prophecy in the process. They don’t hesitate to agree, but in order to help, they need to prepare. They need to become stronger.
These are some of the nights they spend with Dess trying to do just that. At the same time, they do their best to return some semblance of normalcy to her life.
This along with trying to keep their feelings for her, still smoldering after so many years, under wraps.
They are successful at two of those three things.
