“Whitaker, you need to sit down. You have a concussion.” The voice next to him tries to tell him, and it's almost familiar this time.
“Yeah I realized that, I am a fuckin' doctor. Student doctor. Whatever.” he replies, turning to squint at the man sitting next to him. “Look, can you just get Dr. Robby? He’ll tell you I'm fine, I gotta get back to work, I got… patients and shit.”
The man looks at someone behind him, some expression he can’t quite figure out. He starts to say something else, and—oh shit he’s gonna throw up fuck—he tries to lean away and not vomit all over anyone else. He doesn't quite make it.
“Shit,” yeah, he definitely ruined that guy’s shoes. Whoops. “Sorry.”

“You’ve never seen The Santa Clause?” Gaz asked, grasping at his chest in feigned shock.
“Seen ‘im? Just shot the guy.” Ghost wiped blood off on Soap’s shirt sleeve, making him swat at the hand. “Also, what about me made you think I watch a lot of Christmas movies? I need to correct that.”
“Ghost, you’d love it. Santa dies within, like, the first five minutes.”
“... Promising concept.”
A mission drags out and the 141 are stuck in the States for Christmas. Luckily, the Laswells welcome the extra company. While Soap misses his family, he doesn’t really mind spending the holiday with his second one.

There’s a few snickers from the other three soldiers with them born of sheer disbelief that their lieutenant just called jinx on him, and Johnny wants to laugh, too. He wants to ask if he’s still in kindergarten, if he still believes in the tooth fairy and Saint Nick and whatnot-
-but when he opens his mouth to throw a quip at the man, no sound comes out.
Frowning, he clears his throat and tries again.
Nothing.
No matter how hard he tries, his vocal cords fail to produce any noise at all.
“Oh, thank fuck,” Branshaw hisses. “You don’t ever shut up, do you? Bet your team’s just as sick of you as we are, you loudmouthed annoying arse. Can’t you see that everyone wants you to shut the fuck up?”

Summary
Ghost isn’t a fool, he knows what a familiar is (knows where babies come from too, if that’ll earn him a gold star). He understands the concept and the execution of it, even dabbled in the magical theory behind it when he was starting out. What he doesn’t know, frustratingly enough, is for what reason under the sun there is one perched merrily in his garden.
Or Ghost comes to terms with the familiar that he didn't want but definitely wanted him.

Ghost came to Pandora to die amongst unseen stars. He didn't care for his Avatar body - the body Tommy was meant to pilot before he died - he just wanted rest.
Unfortunately, after his transport crashes on the surface of Pandora leaving him stranded, he's forced into wars he swore off when he left active combat. The Na'vi are brutal, but they are not unkind as they pick up the broken pieces of him and remind Ghost...His heart is warm so long as it is beating.

I have not ever found an AU so strong it the world building as much as this. Ghost is genuine and so damn real, while Soap being Na’vi also fits so nicely it’s a damn surprise I love it so much. I can’t wait to see these two fall into their respective slowburns FINALLY.

The mess buzzes with activity around Soap, and he doesn’t think about how his father ripped into him less than 12 hours ago. He doesn’t think about how the first words he's heard from any of his family in years were full of disgust and vitriol and thrown at him through his shitty standard-issue phone. He doesn't ask how his father learned his number or if he knows what base Soap’s stationed on or when his next leave is. He doesn’t remember slamming doors and crashing plates when a group of recruits across from him gets a little too rowdy for 0500 on a Tuesday. He doesn’t feel the burning in his scalp or the ache in his knees when he sees the glint of a Private’s cross as they walk by. He doesn’t flinch when Ghost sits down next to him, silent as ever, and brushes against his shoulder in greeting. And he doesn’t feel the guilt bubble in his throat when he sees the concern flash across Simon’s covered face, as quick to leave as it appeared.
They all have their reasons for joining. Soap just wishes his reasons would wait a little longer before popping up.
