Summary
The dwarven concept of Craft-Wed gives dwarves the option to master thier creative field as opposed to marriage and the expectation of starting a family. Thorin Oakenshild claims to be Craft-Wed but the truth is he only uses it to justify punishing himself and working himself to the bone to try and pull his family and people out of poverty and exile.
It has always been assumed the eldest Durin heir, who's never shown interest in a partner will take on the burdensome, self-sacrificing, craft-wed mantle of his uncle. If the young dwarf has an opinion on this matter no one has even thought to ask, nevermind give him space to find out.
So naturally, his hopeless coward of an uncle assumes Fíli couldn't possibly take issue with sharing his body heat and bedroll with the cold hobbit.
Fíli doesn't, but that's completely besides the point.
