Ilya Rozanov is in a very good mood at the All-Stars weekend, when Marlow starts ragging on him about his mysterious Montreal girl, Jane. The Centaurs, of course, have never heard of her.
Ilya starts praising Jane to the moon and back ... just in time for Shane Hollander and his Voyageurs teammates to stroll up.
Hayden Pike nearly has a heart attack. J.J. laughs and points out that Shane has a mysterious girlfriend, too. And Shane, to Ilya's surprise, leans right in. Even when Marlow asks ... well, whose secret girlfriend is hotter?
(Hypothetically set after the All-Stars Game during Book Six/The Long Game, but I didn't make an effort to match the canonical events at the game. No real spoilers for the Long Game, I think?)

Shane might just be deluding himself once again, but he could feel how Ilya purposely dragged his palm slowly across his, even extending his fingers just so their skin would be touching each other longer; he took his time letting go. It felt way more sensual than it should be.
His cheeks were now turning red. “Ah, don't thank me just yet, haha. Still have to actually fix your car later. But you can trust me on taking care of it, I’ll be sure to be very careful!” Shane says enthusiastically. This makes Ilya smirk again.
“Hm. Then I will thank you tomorrow again. See you.”

“Feels wrong to be taking a gift from another man,” Ilya quips, but takes it anyway. “What is this? ILY-a lot.” He stares at the card for a long time, jaw set and brows drawing together, before shaking his head. “I don’t get it.”
“Read it again, but slower.”
“ILY-a. Lot.” Ilya pauses, tilting his head and rereading it like the answer might appear if he tries hard enough. “I still don’t get it.”
Harris opens his mouth to explain—a bit annoyed at the idea of having to walk Ilya through the joke—when Shane steps in from the ice, breathless and a bit sweaty, clearly not paying attention as he fiddles with his gear.
“Hollander,” Ilya says immediately. “What does ILY mean?”
Shane blinks. “I love you?”
“Yes, I know you love me. But what does it mean?”

“I’m calling from the Child Services Department, Ilya Grigorievich,” the woman continued, and Ilya frowned deeply. “Your brother Alexei Rozanov and his wife died yesterday in a car accident.”
Twice in his life, Ilya had felt like this. The ice around his heart melted just enough for the numbness to vanish and give way to a sharp, stinging pain. It lasted only two seconds before he managed to compose himself.
