Neil’s teammates were shaking his shoulder and pulling off his helmet. Exposed to the camera, Neil’s skin was waxy and pale. With his eyes shut and his body limp, he looked painfully young.
The medics forced the players away and were taking his pulse.
He wasn’t getting up.
Andrew’s blood turned to ice as memories of Neil, pale, unconscious, and bandaged in a hospital bed, came flooding into his mind.

The last thing Nathaniel could remember was the way the light caught the blade of his father’s axe, blinding and terrifying as it was raised towards the ceiling. He couldn’t remember it coming down but it had to one way or another, right?

Neil is frozen in place. He can’t think, can’t breathe; all he can think is: Andrew should be getting up right now, why isn’t he getting up, oh god there’s blood, they’re going to touch him, they can’t touch him.
Andrew suffers a major head injury following a match and has to be rushed to the hospital for emergency care. Neil hates being unable to protect him from the suffering that comes with recovery, so does the only thing he can that will help: stay.
