Pavitr stared at the ceiling. Rolled the words around in his tongue once, twice, before meeting Hobie’s eyes and saying them. “Maya Auntie is dying.”
Hobie’s whole face changed in a matter of a second, from relief to confusion to devastation. “What?”
“The doctors give her another three to four years. That’s if she doesn’t end up contracting something else in that time. And they can put her on a transplant waiting list, but it’s unlikely she’ll ever get it and I just-” Pavitr cut himself off, breathing deeply. His heart was racing, beating in his chest too hard and too fast. He rubbed his sternum with his knuckles.
It felt like the cruelest joke of fate when Maya Auntie began to die just two years before Pavitr finished medical school.
