The old baron took a pinch of snuff. "I’m dying, and damme, the chit’s my grandchild! I’ll leave her safely bestowed. Time you was thinking of marriage.”
“I have thought of it," said Sir Nicholas.
Stephane looked sharply at him. “Not in love, are you?”
Nick’s face hardened. “No.”
“If you’re still letting a cursed silly calf affair rankle with you, you’re a fool!” said Stephane. “Most women will play you false, and I never met one yet that wasn’t a fool at heart. I’m offering you a marriage of convenience.”
“Does she understand that?” asked Nick.
“Wouldn’t understand anything else,“ replied Stephane. “She’s a Frenchwoman.”
Sir Nicholas stepped down from the dais and went over to the fireplace. Stephane watched him in silence, and after a moment he said, “It might answer.”
“No one in your eye?”
“No.”
“Then you’ll marry Tara,” said Stephane. “Pull the bell!”

Summary
At the end of class Mr. Ajayi pulled Charlie aside. “So, I noticed that you were playing on a drum kit,” he began in a questioning tone. “It’s an unusual choice to use a drum kit for percussion in an orchestra."
It certainly was, and Charlie rushed to explain. “Miss Hyder always insisted on it, since I’m the only drum player. But I’ve always wanted to learn to play the timpani, and the snare, or the chimes, I mean there are so many percussion instruments, aren’t there?”
Mr. Ajayi exhaled in audible relief. “Oh, thank god. Not that you aren’t very good at your drum kit,” he added kindly, “but it’s a bit out of place in the typical orchestra, and I was racking my brain trying to figure out what to do with you. I would be delighted to teach you anything you want to know."
“Oh, sir! I would love that,” Charlie gushed.
“I wish there were more of you,” Mr. Ajayi said, more to himself than to Charlie. “If you have any friends who also want to learn–we really need two solid percussionists for everything I want to do.”

Charlie wasn’t sure what he expected to find when he rounded the corner. It certainly wasn’t Nick Nelson, rugby king, gazing at him with wide, startled eyes beneath his perfect swoop of auburn hair.
“Oh!” Charlie said, suddenly tongue tied. Why was Nick Nelson in Charlie and Ben's make-out corner and why did he look so guilty? “Um,” Charlie said intelligently.
“Charlie?”
“Um. You know who I am?”
Nick frowned. “I’ve been sitting next to you in form for a week now, don’t you think I’ve learned your name?”
“Oh.”
“Not that I learned it from you,” Nick added. “I don’t think you’ve said a single word to me.”
