Following the events of the the Kazekage Rescue arc, Gaara struggles to overcome the aftermath of losing Shukaku. He must come to terms with the fact that he's much different now than before, but that doesn't make him any less admirable. Perhaps, it gives him the edge he didn't realize he needed. While he ponders the efficacy of dealing with these issues in silence, Gaara makes a new friend with the unlikeliest person. The very kunoichi he once tried to murder during the Chunin Exams—Sakura Haruno.
Unbeknownst to himself, despite all the trials of adversity she's successfully overcome, Sakura is dragging herself through the emotional ringer. The sting of Sasuke Uchiha's furthered rejection has left her raw and emotionally disenchanted. Adding the death of Chiyo-baasama to the list hasn't exactly made things any easier.
Sometimes, to get to the healing, you have to press through the hurt.

He heard the sound of Naruto hooting and cheering like someone emerging from a deep pool of water after a long period submerged below: jarring and sudden. Naruto, the Kazekage’s own siblings, and Sakura’s other yearmates clapped and at least attempted some level of enthusiasm but most people in the audience simply applauded with bare politeness. Feeling the tremble that vibrated through Sakura’s body, Gaara kept his face mild rather than revealing the reflexive grimace that wanted to show itself in his face.
