Summary
When the operation is done, they shut Superman up in a small, white recovery room at the far end of the surgical ward and close the blinds. It's dark outside, but they shut the blinds anyway. And they keep them closed all throughout the next morning and into the afternoon as they slowly withdraw sedatives. The sun starts its setting. A nurse cracks the slats and takes vitals while a thin beam of light slips in and wanders up onto the bed. Jimmy is on the roof chewing nicotine and scrolling through news feeds when this occurs; and so witnesses none of what immediately follows. The jolt of warmth and light. Pain. The groggy terror of waking up to the prodding of strange hands. The nurse says, “sir, please-!” and Superman stares up at her without comprehension. He can’t remember what had happened, except that something had happened to him. Someone or something had made him bleed.

Summary
Goemon comes and goes and comes and goes.
Though it had been years, Jigen remembered what it was to work alone. You go out, you stay careful, pick your contracts wisely. Don’t look your benefactor in the eye. Make sure the money is good and keep up with the news. Watch your target die. Make sure they’re really dead. Walk the razor’s edge between payday and the grave; and avoid partners you haven’t chosen yourself. Jigen could count them on one hand, the number of guys he’d once worked with who were still in business.
“He’s going to get himself fucking killed,” he says as he watches Goemon walk away.
Lupin shrugs and starts to light a cigarette. “He’ll come back,” he says. But he doesn’t sound sure and when Jigen looks a minute later, he’s still struggling with the lighter.

Summary
Rogue can’t help but snort. She knows, objectively, that some people sometimes were intimidated by him. He did it on purpose, she thinks. What with the smoking and the skulking and the entirely unnecessary ferocity with which he squares his broad shoulders. It helps that he doesn’t seem to always move quite like a person. The pinks of his eyes are dark like a dog’s, an effect that you can only really appreciate when he’s staring you down. Still, Rogue can’t help but sigh just at the sight of him. A breath she hadn’t even realized she’d been holding, gone like that.
“Yea, yea,” she thinks. “You’re one big scary motherfucker.” She could never find it in herself to fear him.

Noah chuckles and goes back to his work. His pencil doesn't touch the page before he's looking up at Rex again. "Wait—you're serious this time."

White Knight doesn't greet Rex—just says, "Your stay here comes with conditions. You realize that by now, yes?"
"Um. Yeah."
"Good. You will behave and do as you are told without question. Cooperate with the doctors, but you will listen to Six and other agents first and foremost."
Rex chews the inside of his lip. "Yes."
White Knight clears his throat. "Is that how you show respect to those above you?"
His face flushes and burns against the recycled air. "Yes, sir?"
"Hm," White Knight looks down his nose at him. "This is really just a formality. A reminder that everyone answers to me, and if you break the rules I will know about it."
"I won't," he insists.
"We'll see." He sounds nearly bored when he says it.

“You're trying so hard to keep all the world on your shoulders,” Ma says. “I wish you knew you don't have to.”
“I was made for it.” Quite literally. There's no reason to pretend otherwise when they both know it. She had to have seen it all, on the news, the entire goddamn parade that he and the rest of the alleged Supermen made. Some reporter once called it a spectacle in his column, but all that it is to Kon nowadays is a muddy memory he doesn't like revisiting.
He supposes he had been some sort of a spectacle back then, though the novelty of it all and the shine have sort of fizzled out somewhere along the way.
