Summary
When Tony first meets Bucky, he has one goal and one goal only - to fuck him into the mattress (or the other way around, he isn't picky) and be done with it. Too bad that isn't what happens. Somehow they get cockblocked into having an actual friendship instead. And it's good. Great even. Better then either of them could have imagined in the beginning. Way better then just a one night stand.
And if there are regrets? If they both wish for something more, something a little less platonic - it's fine. Who needs romance when it can ruin a perfectly good friendship? It's all fine. They have each other - platonically - and that's all that matters. It's not as if their feelings are returned, right?
But then Bucky is gone. Bucky leaves without a word and without a trace and something in Tony breaks. Not just his heart, but something else. Everything else. He vows on that day to never let anyone else in. Never let anyone have that kind of power over him again. It hurts too much. It hurts and he has nothing left to give anyways.

Steps in dealing with your oblivious (and idiot) best friend with an obvious (and returned) crush:
1. Give them some time to figure it out for themselves. Who knows, miracles happen. And they have to learn sometime, don't they?
2. Give them some encouragement. You are dealing with an idiot (and possibly some other issues that aren't their fault).
3. More encouragement. Really. Be supportive. You are their best friend.
4. Start to lose hope. Continue to encourage and listen to them. They obviously need you if they still haven't figured it out by now.
5. Finally lose all hope and sigh in despair. Yes, they really are that oblivious (or insecure).
6. Take matters into your own hands.

No. More accurately, it removes the Winter Soldier from his mind and makes him into his own person. The Winter Soldier, who then has to cope with being a person himself and what that means. And Bucky, who comes face to face with the very thing and issues he never wanted to. Things are only going to get worse before they get better.

Natasha. It's always Natasha these days. And he used to think Steve was bad. (The world is in trouble when those two finally meet.) That isn't the point though. The point is that he is about to go on a date. A blind date. A blind date with a potential dom. Which is sure to end in disaster, no matter what he has been reassured otherwise. Because every date and every attempt since he has been discharged has ended in a disaster of one form or another, so he's not exactly reaching here. Why will this Tony be any different?

No. One little assassination attempt and they all freaked out and stuffed him here. Please. Just another day in the life of. But now he's here and he's bored and his not-so-stupid bodyguards are the only people who he has to interact with until this is over. Good thing they eventually hit on a way to keep him occupied.
