He doesn’t have the energy to fight tonight.
“We need help,” Paul continues. “We need someone who knows what they’re doing and can get us back on track. Someone who knows what gigs we should be playing and what gigs we shouldn’t. Someone who can tell us how to dress and what to say to get the right kind of audiences. Someone who can help us be successful. Reach our potential, y’know?”
As much as John knows they need the help, the idea of giving that kind of control to someone is terrifying.
And then there’s the other thing they have to worry about.
“I don’t want to be anyone’s sex slave,” John says, taking the cigarette back from Paul.
The crudeness makes Paul sigh, and John has to look away. There’s no denying it; the law is strict and the industry ruthless. If they sign a contract with a manager, they’ll be signing over their souls. They’ll be expected to let this person fuck them and humiliate them.

Trashcans and alleyways have become his friends, as of late. Gyuutarou is getting used to huddling up in the shadows of dumpsters when it rains or when the sun shines so brightly it makes his skin blister and burn to be exposed to it for long. It doesn’t fix anything, not really, but it helps.
And alleyways are just as kind. People, real people don’t go down them often. The dirtiest, darkest ones are where a demon can hide the easiest and not be found. Lurking in their shadows during the day and creeping puddle-ridden, filthy streets at night in search of food and new, safer places to stay has become Gyuutarou’s life since he got thrown out.

There’s a chorus of reactions around him. Charles drops the axe, shaking hands coming up to cover his mouth. Javier drops his knife and steps forward, staring wide eyed like he can’t believe what he’s seeing. Sadie swears and turns away. Bill takes a step back, eyes bulging, face contorted in disgust. Lenny sputters, gasping in horror.
His breath catches in his throat, a shrill sorrowful cry cuts through the air, it comes from him. His hands clasp the sides of the box so tight it feels like his fingers would snap. His vision is blurred instantly, but the sight of John was burned into his brain. It’s all he can see.
