Rumi ignored her chest squeezing.
“-A stunning girlfriend, Mira. I mentioned her, right? My girlfriend Mira-” The woman stopped abruptly and lowered her head down into her arms. “Jeez, Zoey, stop rambling at the deaf woman.” It was muffled, but Rumi heard it.
Silenced by grief, Rumi’s world is transformed when she crosses paths with Mira and Zoey, who guide her toward a voice she thought was lost forever.

Mira had a love/hate relationship with some of the turtles at Honmoon Aquarium. On one hand she and Jinu hated each other yet Jinu would never bite Rumi. On the other she loved chilling with Zoey cause the worst Zoey would do is softly headbutt her ankle for snacks and head pats.
It also seemed that human Zoey acted pretty similar to turtle Zoey when either version wanted Mira's attention.

Mira, thoroughly amused at how she had caused the two women across her to short-circuit, replied, "Yeah, that's exactly right. I was around 8 when my family all died."
Rumi did some calculations in her head, eyes going wider than she thought possible. "So that means you're 728 years old, give or take," she stated.
Mira only nodded in reply, fighting to hold back the laughter.
Zoey's hand slid under the table and slowly rose, holding a wooden cross about eight inches tall, eyes still staring off into the distance. Rumi's gaze broke contact with Mira's and looked down. She swatted at the shorter girl's hand. "Zoey, there's no need for that!" she exclaimed. "If Mira really was a threat, you'd already have two marks on your neck. Besides, have you even been to church more than five times in your life? Since when do you carry a pocket cross?"
or, Mira is a vampire, who has just moved (back) to the town Zoey and Rumi grew up in. Spookiness ensues. Maybe love, even.

Rumi couldn't read anymore. Her claws had sunk into her upper arm without her noticing. The sting came second, then the thick and metallic warmth, slipping down to the white bedsheets. She didn't move to wipe it all away.

Old habits die hard. Rumi's still learning how to grieve, how to stop hurting herself, and how to let people in. But maybe, with Mira and Zoey by her side—and wanting to be something more—she has a chance.

“Please stand by,” said the TV, and then it never stood again.
Outside, something knocks back; three taps, long pause, then a fourth tap that asks a question. There is a listening stillness where breath should be.
This isn’t your average Zombie Story.
It’s three girls deciding how to keep each other soft without getting killed, how to be brave without being loud, and what to do when the world starts moving like a puppet on a string.
