After the tsunami, Buck doesn't become a fire marshal. He joins Dispatch, and he works there until he is cleared to go back to work once he is off the blood thinners. But Buck's confidence in himself and his abilities has been shot ever since he lost Christopher in the tsunami, blame and fear convincing him that he isn't ready to go back to firefighting because he doesn't trust himself anymore. So, at dispatch he stays.
Until a call to 3-Alarm fire downtown goes sour and leads to the first responders scrambling for help, but help isn't coming.
Until Buck realises he is the only help available.

Summary
"Eddie!" Buck barges into Eddie's house with his strawberries and honey and burning need to understand what the fuck just happened. "Why have you been telling everyone at the farmer's market you're gay and have a husband??!"
"Uh, cause I haven't?" Eddie says, looking confused, mug halfway to his mouth.
"Then why does everyone at the farmer's market think you're gay and happily married?" Buck exclaims. "Gayly!"

Summary
Approximately ten seconds had passed before Hen hastily folded the letter again, shoving it back into Eddie's hands, her eyes slightly wide. "You - er - you should be reading this. Not me."
Eddie looked at her curiously. "Hen -"
She shook her head. "No, I'm serious. That is not for my eyes, Diaz. I'll - I'll go and search the living room. You - you should read it. I heavily urge you to read it," she added, a little softer this time.
Well, fuck it.
Eddie started to read.

Summary
“I’m alive,” Eddie whispers, pulling Buck in closer by his waist, all of them touching. Pulling Buck out of his head, pulling him closer to him. “We’re alive. It’s okay. We’re gonna be okay.”
“I thought you were dead,” Buck’s voice cracks in so many places it’s barely legible, but Eddie hears it anyway. Hears him anyway.
“I know,” he whispers, and he sounds broken. Severed clean in two, a gaping, bleeding wound. “I know, baby. So did I.”

“Are we going to talk about it?” Buck blurted.
Eddie glanced over, a little surprised. “What part? You getting kidnapped by a crazy couple, or me fleeing the cops because they thought I killed you?” He gave Buck a half-hearted smirk, and Buck still couldn’t decode what Eddie was thinking.
“No…” Buck took a deep breath. “What happened at the diner.”or

Chimney set his wine glass down with a soft clink, shaking his head with an amused chuckle. “I still can’t believe those cops thought you murdered Buck, Diaz.”
Eddie snorted, barely glancing up from his plate. “Well, I guess it made sense.” He shrugged, taking another bite. “It’s usually the spouse.”
The table went silent.

Summary
Eddie pressed a cotton pad soaked in disinfectant tight against the wound, and while Buck had been through far worse, it was easier to show his pain around Eddie.
He let out a short cry, leaning forwards slightly and grabbing onto Eddie’s shoulder before he could spare it a second thought. He needed something to hold onto, something warm and steady and real to remind him he was okay.
“I’m sorry, I know,” Eddie soothed him quickly, and clearly went to pat Buck’s hand but found himself with no free limbs. He glanced about for a moment, then lowered his head to press a quick kiss to the back of Buck’s hand. “Almost done, then you can sleep”

“I— I’m sorry I woke you. I— Fuck. I had a nightmare,” Buck rubbed his eyes with his hands. “Is this real? Are you real? Am I dreaming still?” Buck whispered, low enough that he hoped Eddie didn’t hear.
“Hey. Come here,” Eddie said, his arms opened up, giving Buck a space to fall. So he did. Right into Eddie’s arms. Where he felt safety. Warmth.
“Eddie,” Buck sobbed out, burying his head into Eddie’s chest.

“Ed—Eddie…th-think I mess-messed up,” he slurred. His voice was breathy, like he didn’t have the energy to make his voice work.
Fear clamped around Eddie's heart like a vice. Ice formed in his bones, crawling down the length of his spine.
“What happened, Buck? Where are you, are you home?”
“H-home, yeah,” he mumbled. “Think I…th-think I took too many. Don’t…f-feel good.”

Summary
Before Eddie can even figure out the words to ask, Buck speaks again, always somehow managing to read his mind. “I know you want to ask about it,” he says while picking at the skin around his nails. “You—you wanna know what happened, that’s fair, but…” he sighs. “Not yet. Please.”
Eddie nods, releasing a low, “Of course.” He straightens up in his seat to check the time on the radio. “We have eight hours and forty-seven minutes anyway.”
Buck lets out a small huff of breath at that, but he doesn’t speak again. He turns back to the window. A new soft song plays through the speakers. Eddie wants to turn it off, but he leaves it on. He grips the wheel tighter.

Summary
Something between them is changing, Eddie realizes. Maybe they won’t be able to talk about it for a while, especially now. They both need to heal. But in the light of all this, it doesn’t seem to matter so much.
What might have scared Eddie a week ago, a few days ago, feels wildly insignificant now. If anything, the inevitability is a sudden, silverlined comfort.

Summary
“Buck, hey, what’s wro—”
Eddie stopped in his tracks.
Buck was just standing there, fully clothed and on two feet. Just a slight grimace on his face as he rolled his shoulder out.
“I’m okay,” he said through clenched teeth. He rolled his shoulder again, letting out a loud cry as something didn’t sit right.
Eddie surged forward, hands touching Buck’s biceps to stop him from moving. “No, you’re not! What happened?”
A guilty look crossed Buck’s face. Eddie raised a brow as their eyes met, waiting for an answer. Buck looked down, then back up to Eddie’s face.
“I kinda forgot how difficult it might be to actually take my clothes off and shower without help from a nurse in a hospital.”

“What does that feel like?” Eddie asks quietly.
Buck lets out a thin breath. “Like everything’s happening at a distance.”
Eddie doesn’t interrupt.
Buck stares at the blanket in his lap. “Like I know I’m here. I know this is me. I know I’m in this room with you.” He swallows. “But it’s like… there should be more of me in here than there is.”
Jesus.
Eddie looks down at his own hands because if he keeps staring at Buck’s face, he might get up and cross the room and do something neither of them is ready for.

Summary
As soon as Eddie is passed out on the couch, Buck surveys the damage in the bedroom. Standing amongst the broken glass, overturned treadmill and chunks of plaster, he pulls his phone out of his back pocket and dials a familiar number.
“Buck?” It’s late so Buck’s not surprised by the sleepy voice of his captain. He listens to the sound of bed covers shifting and the soft pad of footsteps before Bobby speaks again, this time a little louder. “Everything okay?”
“No,” Buck’s eyes land on Eddie’s silver star box, lying on its side on the floor, medal nowhere to be found. “It’s really not.”
