Sometimes, Aya’s thoughts drift to half-lidded eyes under darkly tinted glasses and shudders at the idea that he still lingers in their city as a permanent reminder of the wounds he’s inflicted on her and her precious son. But when she opens their door and sees Maki happily chatting with his neighbor, his classmate, and his childhood friend, she feels a bit better about everything. That’s why she’s all too pleased to see an extra pair of scuffed up sneakers next to the usual deposits by her entryway.
