Roy’s eyes finally adjusted to the light, and he realized two things in quick succession: one, he was in deep trouble, and two, he was alone.

It’s a lot to take in; a shock to say the damn least. It still sounds like a really bad joke.

    He broke their promise.

    Summary

He has not seen Edward smile in such a long time, not since he was a child and wound his hand around the end of Hohenheim’s ponytail, laughing and pulling a little too hard. Hohenheim remembers that it did not hurt. He could only focus on his son’s laughter. His hands had started to shake, and Trisha had made a soft worried noise and taken Edward away, cooing to him and grinning back at Hohenheim.

He had ached for Edward to be back in his arms, but he had not known how to ask.

    Summary

Like tonight, a year ago, Ed was visited by his dead mother.

The dream has always been the accident. Of Edward, strapped to a seatbelt in the passenger seat of their vehicle, and, over and over, being unable to dredge himself out. Neither Trisha nor Al responded to his thrashing, screaming, pleading. The truck always hit.

A year ago, it was different.

Edward stood on the outside, in the grass on the corner of the intersection. The sky was bright blue, clouds corralled around the circle of deadly space made up by two crossing roads. He watched his mother inch into the clearing, watched his own face trapped in the cherubic naivety of childhood, enraptured by the front window. Watched him spot the barreling truck, and, for the first time, witnessed the accident from the exterior.

When Edward was a child, a car accident took the life of his mother and put his brother in a coma. Plagued with nightmares for his entire life, nothing makes anything better. A year after a suicide attempt, Ed is involved in an online friend group who plays a dnd-style RPG together. They convince him to try and come to Xing to play the new regional update: and Edward, believing he outgrew his place in his family, agrees.

    Summary

‘‘I used to think Fullmetal was a crude nod at your prosthetics…’’

Roy Mustang’s words were laced with a thoughtful hum, and Edward tried not to feel hurt by the misassumption. Many heard his title and assumed it came down to his automail arm and leg. Ed had just hoped the Colonel – after everything – would’ve been different; that Mustang would’ve looked past Edward’s ill-fitting uniform and cripplingly-heavy automail and only see him as a person.

‘‘But,’’ Mustang continued, pensive, ‘‘I think they spelled your title wrong. You’re not Fullmetal, you should be Fullmettle. As in, you are full of mettle.’’

    Edward blinked, utterly baffled.

    ‘‘Mettle, kid. M-E-T-T-L-E.’’

Mustang spelled it out for him. Literally. A genuine smile tugged at the Colonel’s lips as he rumbled out a fleeting chuckle, affectionately sweeping a hand over the top of Edward's golden crown. The boy's throat constricted as an annoying warm blur suddenly invaded his vision. He had experienced more kind words and actions under this man’s brief command than he had experienced in a long, long time.

It was just a shame that it was only a temporary arrangement.
