“That’ll scar.” Han stood behind him, nervously. He’d always been nervous around him, first, because he was a baby, and Han didn’t understand babies, and then, because he had the Force, and Han didn’t understand the Force. “Girls like scars.”
“It’s not like it matters.” Ben looked out at the thousands of spires. “I’m going to be a Jedi.”
Han grunted in sympathy, and then sat next to him, swinging his legs off the side of the tower. The urge to feel alive, to take risks and taste danger – that was what he’d inherited from his father. “Heard you got off the hook.”
“Not exactly. Community service.”
“Better than a detention block.” Han leaned back on his hands.
Ben scoffed. “It’s asinine.”
His father shifted, looking up at the stars, through the hazy, translucent atmosphere of Hosnian Prime. “What do they have you doing? Picking up orbit pollution, or something?”
“Worse.” Ben snorted. “Teaching orphans to read and write Basic. On Jakku.”
Han winced. “Only slightly better than a detention block.”

Esmeralda is one of the few Disney protagonists who is more woman and less damsel. The Damsel archetype is one of the oldest, one-dimensional caricatures of womanhood, for example Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora. In those stories, the villains are the opposing archetype, The Witch, and the heroes are the male characters who save the Damsel from her own incompetence.
Esmeralda saves herself. She’s not dependent on the men around her, though she works together with the men she befriends. She’s street-smart and spits death in the face (literally). She’s intuitive, interested in people’s true colors, and isn’t swayed by status or appearances.
And she has mastery over her sex appeal. This aspect sets her apart in the Disney franchise and gets the plot rolling in the original story by Victor Hugo. The sensual wildness of her dances symbolizes The Lover archetype; a taboo.
The Madonna-Whore dichotomy shoves women into two shelves; worthy virgin or dirty whore. To assure male dominance over women, Abrahamic religions stigmatized female sexuality. A woman in touch with her sexual power knows her worth and doesn’t put men in the center of her life. Instead she lives for herself and her chosen community. This assures the woman’s freedom while reducing men’s influence over her.
