Summary
Every two years, General Sam Lane is reassigned, uprooting his family for a new posting. This time, the orders lead them to the middle of no-where, Kansas. On their first day, his eldest daughter intervenes when she finds a mysterious local boy being targeted on the side of the road. This chance (or fateful?) encounter will fundamentally shift their lives in the brief window they have before the General’s next deployment, forcing a choice between the orders they’ve always followed and a connection they can't ignore.

He’s not sure what to expect now that Lois is back in town. Technically, nothing happened between them, but he can’t forget how it almost did. He kissed her, almost, She told him she loved him, almost. They acknowledged there was something between them, almost. Then he blinked and Lois was in Star City and Lana was back in his bed.
And Lana is great, but she isn’t Lois. Clark doesn’t know quite when that started to matter so much.
Or, Lana doesn't leave Smallville at the end of Requiem. Lois comes back anyways.

Lois is a pain in the ass. She’s comfortable with this. Men usually aren’t. She’s confident and pragmatic and argumentative, and never learned how to leave well enough alone - all things that make her a very good journalist, and a usually very short-term girlfriend. ‘Sharp and uncompromising’, Perry had called her in the speech he gave when she won her Pulitzer. It’d meant almost as much to her as the award itself. But as much as Clark loves to bicker with her - surprisingly straight-backed when defending a position he believes in, even if she disagrees - he never stays annoyed. Sometimes, she’s pretty sure he argues with her just to flirt.
If she’s being honest with herself, Lois has been actively trying not to get sweet on Clark for most of the time she’s known him. It’s annoying to her that it hasn’t worked. He’s annoying to her. He’s also surprising, and charming, and exciting - all things she can’t believe she believes about a Kansas-raised farm boy, no matter how good looking he is.
But then, there’s also this —
He tells her he’s Superman six minutes into their second date.

Lois stares at the screen for a few seconds until the word Seen appears under the picture. She places her phone on the dresser next to the mirror, and waits.
Nothing for a few heartbeats.
Then, she hears the whoosh she’s so used to hearing, the sound of air being pushed aside, and she feels the familiar heat against her back; she lets herself melt into the feeling without even looking up. Strong arms wrap around her and pull her close, one big hand traveling up her chest to gently cup the underside of her right breast as the other spreads wide across her stomach. The scent of him fills her senses, making her feel truly at home. Her gaze flicks up to see him in the red and blue—Superman, in all his glory, all hers.

“You kiss so gently,” she spoke softly. Clark’s brows furrowed, and he opened his mouth, prepared to speak. Lois put her fingers in his hair and tugged hard, pulling his head back until it hit the edge of the couch. She towered over him and attached her lips to his again, swallowing the whine that escaped him.
Or Clark Kent and Lois Lane have been dating for a few weeks, and Lois is tired of Clark's gentlemanly sensibilities.
