Boyd survives. What follows isn't much of a life. He gets by like a vulture would, feeding on roadkill and other undesirables rejected from humanity's collective embrace. When he hears there's a war on — the war to end all wars! — he joins up, thinking it will be easy feeding. And there, among the new faces, new men, new troops, new slurs hurled at him, he sees a familiar face.
