All of them coming from the same number. Mira’s noticed it as well. One morning they managed to catch a glimpse of the contact name but that only raised more questions than answers. Just what went on between mentor and adoptive daughter when Rumi went to see her after the disaster of the idol awards? They don’t get the chance to ask as Rumi has a realization of her own.

Celine wouldn’t have hesitated to lay down her life for Mi-yeong should she ask); the second was because Rumi needed her to be sober (and Mi-yeong would somehow torment her from the grave if she let her daughter die because Celine was just that horrendously irresponsible).

The first shiver curled up her spine like fire, crawling through her muscles and making her knees buckle. Her lungs burned with every ragged breath, and a pressure rose behind her eyes so intense it felt like they might shatter. Bones creaked and shifted unnaturally. Her fingers were stretched into sharp claws, her ribs bent unnaturally and every tendon screamed in protest. Rumi collapsed onto the floor, her teeth gnashing as fur erupted along her arms and spine, prickling, itching, spreading in angry, hot waves.
Faintly she registers that she is lying in some back alley, and not confined in the safety of the basement like usual. No chains to hold her down, no steel door to prevent her rampage. At first, Zoey thought she was asleep. Her body was prone, tucked into itself like she’d curled up for a nap. Her head bent in a way that it was hidden, like she was cradling it in her hands. The ground underneath her was dark, darker than the area around it.
“...Rumi?” Zoey’s voice waivered.
The body on the ground didn’t move.
Her voice came out louder than she meant it this time. Sharper and laced with the beginnings of hysteria. “Rumi, get up.”

There was the sound of the door shutting. A few footsteps.
“She’s not here?” the voice asked.
Zoey dropped her voice lower, almost conspiratorial. “No. She went out—probably won’t be back for, like… fifteen, twenty minutes.”
A beat of silence. Then a quiet chuckle. “Good. Then I can steal you for a while.”
There was a nervous little hiccup of laughter from Zoey. “Wait—don’t get too close, I’m still live—”
“I’ll stay out of frame,” the voice promised, tone coaxing.
The sound of a hand brushing fabric, then a soft shuffle—the mic catching the rustle as Zoey was pulled slightly sideways. A faint smack of lips meeting. Quick. Too quick to be mistaken.
Chat slowed to a crawl.

As Zoey watched Rumi’s retreating form and heard the quiet thunk of her door shutting in the distance, she lasted a few minutes helping Mira pick up before something in the air changed. It was like heavy clouds descending after a bright, sunny day, and the maknae suddenly found herself tearing up as the emotions of the morning and the past few days truly caught up to her.
Mira, of course, noticed immediately. She set down the cups she was holding and paced forward to touch Zoey’s arm, brows knitted in worry. “Whoa, are you okay, Zo?”
It hit like a flood then, a dam breaking after too long holding back pressure. Zoey stumbled forward and collapsed into Mira’s arms with a hiccupping sob, hot tears streaming down her cheeks. “…We almost lost her,” she whispered, her voice cracking with horror and heartbreak. “Oh God, we almost lost our Rumi.”
