Jonathan’s head lolls to the side, and he smirks at him. “I wasn't trying to insult you,” he says, “sorry. I just meant- I’ve been kind of aimless, lately, so. I guess I’m trying to say thank you. You’ve helped.”
Steve snorts. “What, because I’m another person for you to take care of?”
The joke falls flat between them, and Steve suppresses a wince as Jonathan considers him for a long moment. “Is that what you think you are to me?” he asks quietly after a beat, and Steve’s heart leaps up to somewhere in his throat.
Being friends with Jonathan is only weird if Steve makes it weird, right?

In risposta, Manuel emette una risata. Se solo non si trattasse della sua nemesi universitaria e soggetto su cui si concentra la maggior parte dei suoi istinti omicidi da un mese a questa parte, Simone quasi penserebbe che è qualcosa di bello da ascoltare.
Invece, si limita ad aggrottare le sopracciglia e ad assumere un’espressione indispettita, come se Manuel Ferro gli avesse fatto un torto ad essere vagamente piacevole.
“E che divertimento ce sarebbe altrimenti? E poi è così facile farte ‘ncazza’, manco me devo sforza’.” Gli rifila un buffetto affettuoso sul viso. La mano indugia per un attimo contro la sua pelle, inaspettatamente gentile. “Dai, Bale’, non metterme il muso, sei più bello quando sorridi.”

Il panico gli chiude la gola e gli attorciglia il cuore in una morsa dolorosa che fa su e giù per la sua trachea, ma non ha neanche il tempo di razionalizzare e di provare a pensare a una via di fuga perché–
Perché Simone borbotta quello che sembra essere un Porca puttana, afferra i lembi della sua giacca e se lo tira contro per far scontrare con irruenza le loro labbra.
Manuel ci mette una frazione di secondo in più del necessario per capire che lo sta baciando.
-- o: che non si dica che Simone Balestra non prenda sul serio la tradizione teatrale di famiglia e non sia pronto ad improvvisare se la situazione lo richiede.
