Summary
“For some reason that I have yet to understand, your dreams seem to be trying to bring you to me,” Dream eventually says, his voice a little too even to be casual. “Not only that, but the Dreaming allows you in; it is not something that should be possible.”
Hob turns and takes in Dream’s wary face. “Does it always look like that? So…”
“Desolate?” Dream offers, and his expression doesn’t change, but Hob can read the hurt on him, still. “No, it does not.”
After Dream finally finds him in the New Inn, Hob struggles to rebuild his trust that this—Dream returning—will always be the case. At the same time, the concern that something has gone horribly wrong grows through meetings, dreams, and details that Hob shouldn't notice but does; not that Dream is much more forthcoming than in centuries prior.
That's okay, though; if Hob has learnt one thing, it is how to be patient. Mostly.

While the guards took their stimulants and were careful not to dream, the rest of the household had to sleep. Servants and family, guests and partygoers all slept in the numerous suites, tucked under covers with heads cradled by goose-feather pillows. The deepest, calmest sleep only his ruby could provide collected into a thin trickle of dreaming - not strong enough to carry him home but strong enough to keep him hopeful. Strong enough for Morpheus to close his eyes and let his mind slip away in the current, if only for a little while…
There was only one mind he knew on this mortal plane, only one place he could end up, after all.

Wherein Hob dreams of war, Morpheus dreams of an escape from his prison, and over the span of many years, they fall into dreams that blur the lines between friendship and something more.

Dream is standing in the doorway.

What if, when they meet in the twenty-first century, Hob is a little more human, a little slower to forgive, and Dream a little more cognizant of how one should treat centuries-old friends, though no more socially competent?
Or: Dream's admission that Hob is his friend prompts a realisation of what else Dream's longest - and only - friend means to him.

Summary
Another flash of lightning spills past the curtains, and his lights flicker into oblivion, his tv shuts itself off and his entire living room goes pitch-black. Hob sits straighter, looking around his darkened surroundings in stilted confusion when suddenly everything flares back to life again. His TV remains shut off, but his lights blink back on like they were never out at all.
And between pitch-black and bright lights and the roar of thunder and the deafening stillness between it all – Dream materializes out of the shadows.
The man sits on his sofa, suddenly, unbidden, unannounced, and uninvited.
“Hello, Hob,” he says softly.
Hob does what any other person would’ve done when an anthropomorphic personification materializes on your couch; he screams and chucks his glass of whiskey at his face.

Summary
When Hob Gadling is left in the rain outside the White Horse tavern in 1889, he's forced to reckon with his true feelings for the mysterious being that left him there.
When Dream of the Endless escapes his prison, he finds himself powerless and unable to return to his domain.
A dream can act like a beacon in a storm, and soon Hob finds himself facing down the sources of his feelings much sooner, and in much more dire circumstances, than he ever thought he would.

Summary
When the only lights in the basement are the cold, beetle-like eyes of the guards watching him, the glass turns to water in his mind, the water that of his own realm. His reflection in the orb around him is just him looking into the waters of the Dreaming, the eyes of his captors the glittering masses of unconsciousness writhing gloriously beneath. Perhaps the sigils burnt into the ground in gold are the trim of his robes around him.
The Lord of the Dreaming does not dream the same way we do. Still, in captivity, it becomes remarkably similar. When he is put in the dark basement, he has no way of knowing that across the continents, Hob Gadling stops dreaming entirely.
Hob Gadling starts to dream decades later in flashes of glass, eyes, and runes emblazoned on cement floors. He does not know what it means - the only thing he knows are those eyes, twin north stars, calling out across any distance. He is falling in love with dreams and memories, with someone who cannot see or feel him. He has no way of knowing if his dreams are real- only faith drives him forwards. Hob Gadling is falling in love inside of his head.

Summary
Attraction to Dream of the Endless comes to Hob in a form of a slow, simmering fire. At times it burns brighter, other times it calms until it’s barely noticeable. It never goes away fully, partially because Hob doesn’t want it to.
His companion is the embodiment of hope and dreaming. It would be sacrilege to give up hope in being wanted by him.

Death comes for a raven, and finds her brother. He doesn't ask her for help, but prevents her possible entrapment, so she finds Hob Gadling and suggests he do something about the situation at hand.
Cue a one man resque mission in 1926, which leads to dozens of years of platonic, yet vaguely romantic dating both in the waking world and in the Dreaming.Now with illustrations in the second chapter!
