    The moment the lights had turned brightest, the moment the cheering reached its zenith, Rumi had felt them. She had felt the horrible poison in her blood and then to her horror she had seen it. In the seconds before the lights shut off, she had actually seen and been reminded of the curse within her. The patterns, the jagged lines of unnatural shades of purple -ugly, hideous, wrong and worst of all: inhuman- had grown. Her arm felt as if burning from the inside out and then for the briefest of moments the markings and with them the terrible truth of Rumi's heritage, the fault at the center of her being had been exposed.
