9:27 Dragon.
Cullen arrives at his first assignment to the Kinloch Hold Circle Tower on Lake Calenhad, in his home arling of Redcliffe and just a few days and a ferry ride from the village of Honnleath. But his whole life is different. Cullen begins to learn to operate in a world where Fereldans must cooperate with Orlesians and humans with elves, where mages usually speak about Templars rather than to them, and Cullen's entire experience of reality is filtered through the lens of a lyrium dust.
In the first few weeks' of his time at Kinloch Hold, Cullen is still making an impression on the inmates of the Tower, mages and Templars alike, when he observes something after the rest day service that pulls him into a series of events that will make him unforgettable to them all, as well as show him exactly what he has signed up for with the Templar Knights.

Summary
When Duncan told Gwyn Cousland to seek out another Grey Warden in the camp at Ostagar, she went looking for another middle-aged, grim-faced veteran. She found instead a young man with a hauntingly familiar face, and the younger child of the teyrn of Highever who through the past five years had been steadily confirming her reputation as a backcountry eccentric, now possibly the last hope for her nearly extinguished house, found herself hurled right into the heart of Ferelden politics.
Alistair and Gwyn Cousland, from their first meeting on the field at Ostagar to the last moments before the sunrise before the final march on Denerim. Mostly canon until the very end, with AU elements.

Gwyn wanted to kill something. Or for Mallol to give her forty lectures on the Maker's mercy. Apparently, she hadn't been listening.
"Do any humans live in Highever's alienage?" she asked her father. "Or any elves in Highever's other neighborhoods?"
After her father returns from a visit to Denerim with news of the alienage purge there and the deaths of six elves, Gwyn Cousland sees some things on a ride to Highever she has never seen before. But when she attempts to discuss them with Teryn Cousland, she learns again that effecting change is not as simple as it seems.

"The shems said no one was meant to die in the purge. King Cailan was an advocate for his people, but those people must be law-abiding. Because everyone in the alienage was just going to sit down and take it when men with swords and axes kicked down the doors to their homes, smashed in the windows of their shops.
So here they were, packing Soris's things into bags, because no one was meant to die."
After Soris's parents and a handful of others are killed in Arl Urien's purge of the alienage, Soris moves in with Cyrion, Tirrian, and Shianni. The house once again has four people in it, but it's nothing like it was before.

“There were minstrels on every street corner; traveling players; vendors selling fried dough, spiced apples, or sausages. It was important the new king keep the people's spirits up, touring the most important corners of Ferelden even in the dead of winter to show them everything was fine.”
Given leave to go to town to buy supplies before he enters Templar training proper, Alistair is in the city of Gwaren when King Cailan comes through on his royal progress. As Alistair enjoys the festivities with two impoverished street children and a fake fortune teller, he thinks about how two dead women can make the difference between a man on a war horse in a procession and a boy with no second name on the street, on the way to a position he has no desire to fill.

Mother smiled. ‘We have begun receiving certain overtures.’”

“Tavish wasn’t insensible of Rutherford’s appeal. Common-born, no advantages of education, funding, or connection, Rutherford was doing more than holding his own against the others; he was thriving. He was tall, well-built, earnest, diligent. He had the makings of an officer soldiers would fight and die for someday. And Tavish wasn’t sure Rutherford would ever make a good Templar for just that reason.”
Two years older than his class of Templar recruits and already a teacher of younger combat trainees, Cullen Rutherford is up for consideration for early vows and entrance into the Order, but Knight-Commander Tavish has serious reservations about the young man.

‘You’re a bastard and a commoner. Be grateful for what you’ve got, and don’t expect anything, but—'
But.”
Alistair advances at the Bournshire Monastery. He does well in combat training for the Templars and enjoys his academic studies.
