Summary
"I just need you to know," Will says quietly, and he makes himself hold Mike's gaze, "that if something happens - if I hurt you, or anyone else - it's not because I wanted to. I would never want to hurt you, Mike. Never."
The words hang between them, loaded with more meaning than Will intended.
There's a pause where all Will can hear is their breathing echoing against the storage closet's walls. The hum is more distant now, buzzing in the back of Will's mind, but the uneven inhales coming from in front of him sound louder. The breath tickling his nose (because they really are that close) feels realer.
Mike's eyes are still darting across Will's face, and Will can feel him inhale sharply. "Will, why are you so convinced you're going to hurt someone? What did Vecna show you?"
Everything, Will thinks. He showed me everything. Showed me killing you over and over until I couldn't see anything else.
Somewhere between slaying interdimensional eldritch horrors, exploding an entire dimension, and risking their lives countless times, Mike and Will find each other.

Water dripped from Will's hair, ran down his jaw, caught on his lips.
Mike stared at it.
Stared like he'd forgotten where he was.
Then, slowly he lifted a towel and pressed it gently to Will's mouth, wiping the water away. His hand didn't even shake. He was steady.
Will's breath stuttered. Tingles tremored all the way up his spine.
He didn't move. He couldn't. He was too aware of Mike's hand, of the way his eyes kept dropping back to his lips.
That look again.
The one Will had seen a dozen times now and never understood.

“And us?” Mike presses, a sick sense of deja vu creeping coldly over his brain.
Will exhales sharply, “We’re friends. We’re friends! You made sure of that. So I don’t know why you’re so mad at me!”
“Because it was supposed to be me!”
Will blinks, “What are you talking about?”
“I’m mad because it was supposed to be me!” Mike shouts it desperately, like a plea, like this is making him go crazy, and fuck, maybe it is, “After everything—at the end—it was meant to be me. Not him. I don’t want it to be him. I want it to be me.”
Or, Mike doesn't realize his own feelings, until Will's are staring him dead in the face. Vecna's gone, they're nearing the end of their senior year, and all of a sudden Will has a boyfriend. Everything goes downhill pretty quickly from there.

His words hit Will hard enough that he had to brace himself against the railing. It felt like they were having two separate conversations, and he couldn’t keep up with either one.
Mike took a deep, fortifying breath. “The truth is, I just want you, Will.”
“But… I don’t…”
“I know. I know you don’t. I know there’s someone else, back in Lenora. Believe me, it’d be easier if I didn’t feel this way, but I can’t help it.”
“Mike, what the hell are you even… you love El.”
Mike blinked. “Of course I love El. I’ll always love her. That doesn’t just disappear. But we broke up. For real. And what we had was… it was kid stuff. First love. Easy. Safe.”
Will’s breath felt trapped in his lungs.
“When I think about you,” Mike said quietly, “it hurts. In this way that doesn’t feel safe at all.”Or, Rockin' Robin intervenes and forces the boys to finally talk about their feelings.

Mike has a choice. That's what people on the radio say, people in Hawkins say, Mike, himself says. Staying in a relationship with El is a choice. Looking at Will is a choice. Looking away from him is also a choice.
Mike can look at Will if he goes back to his girlfriend afterwards. He can kiss her if he wants to look at Will again. At least that's how it used to work. Now Mike can't kiss El. Every time he closes his eyes and feels her lips on his, he sees Will instead of the red darkness under his eyelids. He wants to feel the warmth of his lips against his.
Desire is not a choice. Desire is just desire. Desire is just a thought that, like a parasite, takes over his brain. Kissing Will is a choice. Mike doesn't make it. He chooses not to kiss his girlfriend, so he won't want to kiss Will.
