Sam stands, right there in the building’s hallway, a dark plastic bag in his hand. His eyebrows rise as he takes in Bucky’s disheveled state, as well as the complete destruction the apartment is in. “Dude,” he starts and Bucky scowls, stepping aside, making way for Sam to step into his apartment.
“Shut up.” He closes the door behind Sam, then promptly sticks his right hand into his pocket again, eyes skittering over the despondent state of his living room before he realizes what he is doing, and gives Sam a withering look. “Not a word.”
Sam sucks on his teeth, studying Bucky carefully for what seems like forever, before deciding on something Bucky isn’t privy to and grinning, raising the plastic bag he is carrying so that it is level with Bucky’s face. “I brought cat treats.”
The one in which Bucky Barnes partakes in illegal activities, gets his hair cut, and has a terrible day. In that order.

“Sit down.” Sam barks. It sounds like an order and he doesn't give a fuck what that will do to Bucky’s psyche.
Bucky complies. He sits stiff on the end of the bed, staring at the floor, shoulders hunched, and hands clasped in his lap. His chest heaves erratically.
Sam drags a hand down his face. It comes away wet. He takes a controlled breath in, and out, fighting a wave of nausea. He feels torn up inside, like he's been slashed open and hollowed out.

For a prompt: Project Insight crashes and burns, but HYDRA had a dozen backup plans and a ways down the road, one of them works. Steve and Sam have found Bucky and they’ve been working together, but then suddenly HYDRA’s in charge of the entire world and Bucky and Sam (and Steve?) are taken captive.

Any day now—any second—Bucky and Steve are going to come crashing through a wall of squid Nazis, eight feet tall, shield in hand and guns blazing. Sam’s going to punch in some faces until his hands hurt, throw off some amazing one liners, and they’re going to ride into the sunset.
While eating steak.
It’ll be great.
Except that Steve’s dead and Bucky might as well be, and nobody’s coming for Sam.
