“Wings?” Piper repeated, eyes wide as she focused on Annabeth’s upper back, at the two bumps on her shoulder blades.
“Yeah.” The blonde affirms with a smirk. “It’s an Athena kid thing, y’know. But unfortunately, it’s physically impossible for them to actually, well, sprout.” Annabeth makes a gesture to enunciate her words. “Well, unless I was a god, I guess.” She muses, before shrugging. “Not like that’s gonna happen, so…”The rest of the conversation was meaningless, but that one line offered on a whim caught in gold to watching eyes.
Annabeth shouldn’t have tempted the fates like that.
She made it far too easy.
But of course, it wasn’t just her. Couldn’t just be her.

Sara turns to face the Narukami once again, looks, yes, but sees, perhaps for the first time, the way her eyes crinkle, the shadows that nestle deep beneath her high cheekbones. She sees them move as the other speaks, as oil on water.
“And what do you think of that? Of me?”
“I—” she chokes, words failing her when she needs them the most — standing upon a realization as she is, on the prow of a ship far out at sea, having come across the detritus of another, all but lost to time.
It is easy to recognize their likeness, weathered away by five hundred years of storm and salt, until only the differences remain. Skeletal, fundamental as they are, “You have no God to turn to.”
“That I don’t.” An easy smile that pulls the shadows deeper still, an otherworldly creature that both haunts and awes.
Sara cannot peel her eyes away.

It’s been three years since the events that shook Hatchetfield, and the town has gone back to being the quiet, uneventful island that it always was. But The Lords in Black are still around, hiding in plain sight. More specifically: Grace Chasity’s apartment.
Grace is now twenty-one, with a job at the Recreation Center, and five peculiar “roommates”. She wouldn’t have gotten where she is without them, but has noticed that more recently, they’ve been spending less and less time in The Black and White, and more time hanging around in her apartment. Grace doesn’t mind. It’s better than living alone!
