Summary
It was an accepted fact that an agent’s daemon settled either very early or very late. Invariably, those that settled early settled on that first night. Those children normally ended up on Night Watch: Talents fading fast and lifespans even shorter. Bartolomé and Lucy were caught between a rock and a hard place. Lockwood just about jumped out of his skin. On instinct he reached for Lucy, her hand still lying atop the piano. His hand found hers in the dim light, fingers slotting through hers like puzzle pieces clicking together.
“I’m listening,” she breathed, and Lockwood wasn’t sure if she was speaking to him or the Visitor, but it was enough that he paused, rather than yanking her back immediately. Instead he hovered a moment longer, his other hand squeezing anxiously around the handle of his rapier.

But first a little bonus case fic for set up.Ok I got carried away and wrote a whole ass case fic. So now you get an angsty case fic + a sweet fluffy epilogueLockwood could hear his heart beating in his ears. No matter that he’d been prowling a haunted house the better part of the last two hours, this was what had his adrenaline pumping.
He’d be lying if he said he hadn’t fantasised about this exact thing. Out on a job, browsing the aisles of Mullet’s, waiting in the observation deck at the furnaces, there was always a part of him looking out the corner of his eye, waiting to catch her gaze on him, looking for that trademark scowl, imagining it melting into a surprised smile.
In his imagination, she was always happy to see him, despite the abundant evidence that the real live Lucy had no interest. For god’s sake, she’d snuck out in the middle of the night without so much as a note or even forwarding address. Perhaps now he should just take it as a win that she was no longer running.

To be clear, it’s George’s idea from the start.
“We need someone else,” he says, as he and Lockwood stagger home in the cold, gray dawn. “Another agent. Someone who's better at Listening than you or me, because this is the third time we nearly got out in one piece, because you can’t Listen and I’m shit at it.”
Lockwood would probably feel more amenable to this suggestion if his best coat didn’t smell of burnt salt and iron, not to mention if every salt bomb and his rapier didn’t feel like it weighs fifty kilos, each. “Weren’t you just saying we needed to start out slow? We’ve only been open for three months. And besides,” he adds, “who can we get? The other agencies won’t work with us, because we don’t have a supervisor,” he spits out the last word like it’s a curse.
“I’m not spending another night nearly getting ghost touched because we’re hamstrung by our limitations,” says George, flatly unimpressed by him, as always. “We need someone else. Put an advertisement in the Times if you won’t work with the agencies.”
