    Summary

Peter loves his friends. Which is why he had to kill them. And now, he's doing- well. Alright. Things didn't turn out exactly as he'd anticipated, but he's making it work. Living his life. As a rat. Mostly trying not to think about things.

    Fine. Things could be better.

But he hadn't thought they'd get worse- which is exactly what happens when, three years after James died, he's come back. And for some godforsaken reason, he's decided to make that Peter's problem. (Okay, okay- Peter gets it. He did kill him.) Peter is sure that James is going to turn him in, ruin his life the same as Peter had ruined the Marauders.

But this is James. And he doesn't do any of that.

    What was Peter expecting, really?

(Features: A lot of fighting, a lot of forgiveness, and a splash of necromancy. Alright, you got me- rather a lot of necromancy. But come on- we can't just have the ghost of Christmas James show up. Haven't you seen 'A Muppet's Christmas Carol'? There needs to be at least two more ghosts.)

a weird, wonderful, hilarious, and surprisingly poignant portrayal of peter pettigrew that manages to redeem the series' most traitorous and cowardly villain. redeeming peter without minimizing or rewriting any part of his betrayal is no small thing; in fact, I thought it impossible before reading this. the rest of the marauders are also given the room to be their terribly flawed and battered selves, and to feel whatever they feel about peter's choices (mostly, and understandably, murderous rage) while on their way to forgiving him. it shouldn't work, and yet it does, thanks in part to some inspired magical world building and a perfect injection of deus ex machina to get everyone safe, sound, and happy as the story ends. meanwhile, harry is, as always, the breath of fresh air the animates all that is good and pure in the world. just by being himself, he makes everyone around him better, which is the best, truest portrayal of harry potter that one can write.

    Summary

Zuko choked on a sob and, impossibly, Lu Ten’s ghost gripped his hand tighter.

“I’m here, baby cousin, I’m here.” Said the ghost of Lu Ten, and Zuko felt warm fingers brush gently across his scalp, carding through Zuko’s sweat-soaked hair.

“M’ sorry that you’re dead,” Zuko wept, pressing his head feverishly into the touch, “I miss you. I miss you so much.”

Featuring a still very much alive Lu Ten, the slow revival of Zuko's self esteem, and how ending a war begins at home.

lu ten survives, and the world shifts towards peace, even as the royal family splinters with zuko stuck in the middle. an excellent what-if that rivals canon in its ability to weave compassion into the very core of the narrative alongside themes of found family, honor, grief, and war

    Summary

Amidst the row houses, there was a brick building with a single overhead light and an old wooden sign. The Burrow, it read, in loopy scrawl that looked as though it was done by not one, but many hands. And at the door was a boy--no, older than a boy, though not by much--with very red hair.

    “You alright?” he yelled.

    “Lost,” she yelled back.

The boy held the door open.

earns the best compliment i can give a non-magic au: the characters are faithfully rendered, warts and all, without the scaffolding of seven books to inform their characterizations. ron and hermione fall for each other slowly and sweetly, with false starts, fond banter, and devotion rooted in mutual respect.

the parts with the potters are excellent; the parts about those left behind could probably be excised, though I do love the ending. nevertheless, I keep coming back to the imagery of james and harry lying on the couch, an exhausted son cuddling with the father he had so long been denied. the familial devotion may be too fluffy for some, but I will never get tired of harry finally getting what he deserves.

every single thing I look for in a servitus fic, my very favorite genre. harry, sweet, reckless, irrational, but above all good; severus, tortured but trying, devoted to harry even when he wishes it were not so. their happiness is hard fought and well earned, pure and unbreakable.

in other words, perhaps my favorite fic of all time, and certainly in the top 10.
