“Now that I’m no longer beholden to a rather arbitrary moral code, I have to ask: Do you pay taxes? Actually, more importantly, do you think I can stop paying taxes now? That seems like a sufficiently demonic thing to do. Refusing to do my civic duty and whatnot. Quite devious, I’d argue.”
This was, in hindsight, not the most sensitive way of breaking the news.

“What are you doing here,” is all he can think to say. He whirls around, and there he is. On Crowley’s right, standing there like he’d never left. Where he belongs, Crowley’s mind helpfully supplies. He wishes he could punch himself in the brain, knock the thoughts right on out of there.

Mycroft Holmes is a successful, yet reclusive, mystery writer whose books have topped bestseller lists for years. Mycroft’s agent, Anthea, nearly had to resort to torture to persuade the writer to allow a studio the rights to film one of his books and he only agreed after a section was added to the contract that gave him final say on the choice of actors to play the detective in his novel. The studio wants the highly profitable and extremely sexy Greg Lestrade for the role, but Mycroft isn’t happy with the choice, since Greg’s films don't fit the more cerebral tone of the novel being filmed.
Greg, however, is desperate for the role, as he’s wanted to break out of the pigeonhole he’s been confined to, acting wise, and truly get the chance to show his skills as a serious actor. The studio finally pulls Greg from a publicity tour for his latest film and sends him to Mycroft’s remote country home to do some persuading. Once there, after getting to know the secretive, brilliant and slightly-eccentric Mycroft Holmes, Greg isn’t certain which ranks higher on his persuading list - him getting a role he dearly wants or him getting a man he dearly wants. After the events of Sherrinford, the Holmes family is forever altered. Mycroft no longer has anything to hide, but instead must find a way to win back his brother's trust. Sherlock is faced with truths about himself long-buried, and both of the brothers Holmes realize that their positions in the world are no longer as fixed as they might have seemed.
Along with these realizations come new opportunities. Mycroft finds himself drawn to Inspector Lestrade, and now that all his secrets have been laid bare he finds he doesn't want to hold back anymore. Sherlock too begins to find it harder and harder to remember why he has been repressing his desires - especially when he is around his best friend, John Watson.
The past is a dark and melancholy place, and neither Holmes wants to return there - so it's time now to push forward, and take a chance on something brighter.
