Summary
Eddie had been watching the new kid from afar for a solid month before he first realised that something was off about him. Of course, if you asked him, he didn’t know much about the new kid, had never even once looked his way, and honestly couldn’t care less about him. He knew he was lying, his best friend Bill knew he was lying, most of the class knew he was lying at this point, but it was one of the unspoken secrets that no one ever brought up to Eddie’s face.

Summary
Smoke. That’s it. Booker smells so good because he doesn’t smell like smoke. “You smell good?” Nicky says again, still confused.
Booker laughs. “Thank you again? You’re really tired, Nicky. Do you need help? With the baby?”
“I mean, not that you don’t smell good. Like your cologne, and your cooking. But. No smoke?” Nicky asks. Fuck, he’s so tired.
“Oh. That,” Booker says. He sounds. Hesitant? Nicky’s not sure. His brain is fuzzy. “I quit,” Booker continues.

Summary
Too late, Booker realizes he‘s shown his hand. It’s not purposeful, he just can’t help the way his eyes go entirely too soft, watching Joe chat with the waitress who had just dropped every single one of their drinks. He’s telling her about his ill-fated job at a bar in their second year of university, making her laugh through her tears and helping her mop up the mess of spilled beer.
Booker’s just about to get up and help them, he is, but he’s taking a single moment to wallow in how kind Joe’s smile is. He also apparently remembers Joe’s time as a bartender very, very differently, than Joe. Joe is currently describing himself as a naïve, hapless twenty-year-old who could never remember drink orders and broke more than a few glasses trying to be smooth. Booker does not recall it like that at all. He forces himself up at last, grabs a stack of napkins off the empty table next to them and goes to help, but he’s a split second too late.
Nicky’s coming back from the restroom with a pile of paper towels in his hands, and he’s staring straight at Booker.

“Book, look at yourself,” he says. “This is fucking sad. They’ve already lost their mom. Now they’re gonna lose you, too?”
Booker can’t look at Joe. He can’t see those eyes— Sophie’s eyes— so concerned and so sad and so disappointed. “Fuck off,” he says. “Get the fuck out of my house.”
Joe shakes his head. He bends over and saddles a duffel bag on his shoulder. “You want your sons back?” Joe says. “Get sober. Then we’ll talk.”
Fourteen months after the death of his wife, Booker hits rock bottom. But he didn't know that getting sober would mean gaining so much more.

She hears the tiny intake of Booker’s breath, sees the even tinier lift of his shoulders towards his ears.
