The silence that follows is deafening. Even the roar of the fire seems quiet in comparison to the absence of the words Buck isn’t saying.
“I love you,” Buck offers.
Eddie wants to wake up.
“Don’t,” he manages.
or: when buck is crushed by a burning tree while he and eddie rescue children from a forest fire, eddie has to make the agonizing decision to leave him behind— but he promises he'll come back, and he won't break a promise to buck. not again.

Seriously, this isn’t how Buck wants to spend Eddie’s last days in town; he’s really content to swallow it down again, keep the peace. He’s going to tell him he put in the notice on the loft, and they’re going to head to the bar with their family, and they’re both going to smile while Eddie drives away, even if it kills them. That is, until Eddie says it.
“If you're going to make this about me having to choose between you or my son, you’re going to lose. Every time.”
In hindsight, he really wishes he could have taken a deep breath, said no, c’mon, of course—that’s, that’s not even a question. He would prefer to take back the angry laugh, too.

Buck just looks at him—tired, concussed, past pretending.
“Eddie, I’ve been on the table for years. Jesus Christ—I built the damn table. I sanded it, stained it, set a fucking place for you at it. I waited for you to sit down. Do you know what it does to a person to love a life they're not actually part of? To be allowed everywhere but chosen nowhere?”
Or, a collapsing stairwell, years of swallowed feelings, and a fight that finally forces the words out.

Buck has been feeling ignored and avoided by Eddie on shift for weeks. After a difficult call and heavy tension between them, Buck finally snaps in the landing bay in front of the entire team. Angry and hurt, he confronts Eddie about all the times Eddie dismissed him, accused him of making things about himself (the lawsuit, the fight in Eddie's kitchen after Bobby's death, and past moments), and never apologized afterward. Eddie tries to reach for him, but Buck pulls away and leaves.

“I listen to the radio, Buck,” Eddie says, rolling his eyes. Buck just raises an eyebrow and Eddie feels a little offended again. “Yes, I know who Sabrina Carpenter is.”

Buck’s first shift back at the 118 after the lawsuit was nothing like he’d imagined and Buck wasn't sure how he'd bridge the sudden distance between him and his team. But the disappointment of their brush-off was eclipsed when he came home from that first shift to find an old flame waiting on his doorstep with a choice that was really no choice at all. Buck had no idea how to be a dad, especially without the help of the people he'd come to think of as his family, but he was determined to figure it out; and maybe figure out some things about himself along the way.

It had been a little over six weeks since he had had his first shift back. At first, he'd tried to act normal. He had already texted everyone how sorry he was in the old 118 group chat, though not a one of them had replied. When he'd walked into the loft at the start of that first shift, he'd given a smile and greeting that were no more than shadows of his usual bright personality due to nerves. The response had been curt, disinterested, like he was just some stranger. Nobody was outright mean. They were civil and professional, but that was almost worse.
Buck would've preferred they yelled at him, told him how much they hated him. He would've rather gone through a million and one versions of his argument with Eddie in the grocery store.
Instead, it was like they didn't care at all.

Buck is suffering as the 118 ices him out after the lawsuit, and he's forced to try and cope with the fact that the little family he had found didn't seem to care about him anymore. But when he gets injured and Eddie finds out, he learns the truth.
