When Zuko dashes into the sitting room, it is with the same wide-eyed panic that he ran from Azula’s smoking hands when he was a child. Iroh bites down on a smile. Zuko looks the same, even now, a decade later with a scar blossomed over one side of his face, green and brown robes replacing the solitary reds of his childhood. His hair is puffed up around his face. He looks like a very frightened, very windswept turtle-dove.
Zuko dives behind Iroh just as Aang breezes to a stop in the doorway.
Five times Zuko hid behind Iroh, plus one time Zuko stood proudly in front of him.

Shouta had never believed the tales that sailors told. In the nearly fifteen he’d been at sea, he’d heard a lot of drunken stories from pirates and merchant sailors alike; tales of the Kraken, of sirens and selkies and merfolk, all manner of wild inventions to explain away why some kind of tragedy had befallen their ship. He had always scoffed at stories of rogue waves, appearing from nowhere in calm seas, with a crest that reached up above the mainmast and washed away everyone from the deck. He was certain that the disasters that befell sailors were, by and large, human in nature.
He was wrong.

“What, that you like to fucking polar bear swim like an absolute nut case?” Katsuki’s words might have been lost as Izuku’s head slid under the water, except his ears immediately shifted from the inferior, fleshy human version to wide, flared fins. They were much more sensitive to vibrations, especially through water. He stayed under the water for long moments, body shivering from his transformation. It had been months since he’d been able to visit his home waters, and his tail curled and flexed in a joyful ache. The blanket of the lake felt protective, and he wanted to stay. However, he knew it did not hide him in its clear, shallow water.
He broke the surface slowly, eyes squeezed shut and heart pounding. His tail twitched in his nervousness, and his entire body winced at the large splash caused by his caudal fin slapping water. The only sound after was water lapping at the rocky shore of the cove and their breathing. He focused on the feeling of his main heart pounding hard in his chest, waiting.

Katsuki closed his eyes, feeling vulnerable and wanting to process it in a veiled semblance of privacy. He drew Izuku close, who settled his head comfortably on his shoulder, fingers trailing gently over the skin covering his ribs while he waited. The fear and shame of being a threat to Izuku and his family didn’t abate, necessarily, but he felt the lock and chains he had long ago wrapped around hopes and fantasies and dreams regarding his and Izuku’s future come undone and fall away. A warm excitement spread through him, growing more urgent.
When he opened his eyes, he was looking straight at the airship.
