Порой казалось, что Мастеру совсем ничего не нужно. Он не гнался за богатством, зарабатывая совсем немного, лишь чтобы прокормить себя да оплатить крышу над головой. Он не желал славы, и, если и хотел признания, не был готов пойти ради него по головам. Его нельзя было искусить вкусными яствами и дорогими винами, хорошей одеждой или автомобилем. Его вполне устраивал его уютный уголок и пешие прогулки по стремительно меняющейся Москве. Словом, ему было нужно совсем немного для жизни, и всё же он был печален. И Воланд не мог устоять перед тем, чтобы разгадать, почему - и предложить наконец Мастеру что-то, что бы его искусило. Попытка за попыткой оказываются тщетными, и однажды вечером Воланд решает узнать всё напрямую. Кончается это вовсе не так, как он планировал.

But he is running, running, he is heading toward the end of the bridge, toward the slope leading to the edge of the aqueduct, he is ignoring the screaming ache of his exhausted limbs and the faraway shouts of his comrades as he sprints across raw concrete and then across frost-laden weeds, across bitter soil.
What am I doing?
He isn’t quite sure, not yet, but he knows that the Panzer fell into the middle of the aqueduct, and that water at temperatures below freezing can induce shock within twenty seconds or less, and if he is too late...
(Or, the version of events where, instead of leaving Klaus to his death, Nikolay saves him and in doing so triggers a chain of circumstances that neither of them could ever have predicted.)
