"You should sleep maybe." Etoiles had told him, moments before the door had slammed open, the distant footsteps approaching usual enough that they'd thought nothing of it. So little that Etoiles had even joked in the moment. "Before they come take you to your dragon wedding."
The cell was cold and musty, their air stale and hazy with smoke, and it'd been an entire week since they'd been detained, stopped in a random check just outside the town's perimeter. They hadn't thought much of it at the time, having been traveling companions for a while- some places were just more paranoid than others, and since they both had their registration and classification papers, they assumed it wouldn't take more than a few minutes of verification. They had begun to mention needing a place to stay for a few days for Missa to sweat out his slight fever, but they'd been escorted elsewhere before they even had a chance to finish.
He remembered the sound of shattering glass, but no much else until he'd awoken in this cell, Etoiles laying limp by his side.

There were lips pressing briefly against his shoulder, and Missa couldn't tell if that was on purpose, couldn't help but wished it was on his mouth again, of if he could at least see-
They hadn't spoken much after that first kiss- Phil had leaned forward first, and Missa... Missa would always take whatever Phil was willing to give him. Months gone traveling and trying to get back home while Phil was stuck alone, caring for a child they were both a parent to. Phil never blamed him outright, never even seemed mad, but Missa couldn't help but be grateful for it all, for even being allowed back inside the house at all.
They were already doing... this, he couldn't be greedy. He was already taking too much and Phil was... too generous, too sweet, too... everything.

"It's good to see you again, Philza." The Queen bowed shortly. "I trust you've been well?"
"I'm here." He said in lieu of the truth, with a shrug and as casual a smile as he could manage, feeling the imprint of hands all over him. Too many people were looking at him, and a wave of goosebumps rushed over the surface of his skin. "And I heard you wanted me to play nice with our new friends on the other side?"
"Something like that." She sighed, waving one of her attendants forward, though not without a slightly too-hard look he couldn't bring himself to meet head-on. Several sheafs of paper were passed to him, the purple tinge of it familiar, though the ink was far too dark to be End-made. "These are the trade agreements that we have been going over for the past few months now, but they also requested a representative of our courts to... permanently reside in the Overworld, as a show of trust."
Ah. A hostage. That, at least, Phil could understand.

Summary
Missa was unlike any master Phil had ever had before.
There was just... something in the way he handled Phil that was almost the exact opposite of everything he'd come to expect. Phil knew what he was; a weapon, an unfeeling tool for his masters to put to use, a thing that could be sent out so real people wouldn't die. Even now, standing in the middle of a room the size of his old holding cell, his face nauseatingly bare, all he could do was stand guard as Missa nervously plucked at the strings of his instrument, the noise of it discordant and hesitant. Missa's eyes flicked up towards him and Phil straightened, awaiting instruction, but then Missa looked away again.
Phil wasn't supposed to question his masters in any capacity, but it seemed obvious enough that Missa didn't seem to know what to do with him.

Missa smiles. “You know, maaaybe I’d fall for that if I could actually dream. But, ah, no.”
Dammit.
Missa plants his feet on the floor and asks, much more awake, “Okay, so why’re you up?” His words aren’t accusatory; if anything, he sounds concerned.====
Philza wakes up after a nightmare he already forgets. Missa is there to help calm his nerves, to help him come back to reality.

Missa is wearing himself thin trying to keep his dreams alive after so many set backs. A break in at his shop is almost the breaking point, until he meets a man with more tattoos than he can count and two kids with their hearts set on helping him achieve his dreams.

Demonic rituals are nothing trivial, they have to be perfect, because the slightest mistake can spell something far worse than disaster. They’re very difficult to learn, and very difficult to learn about, since anything to do with demons has been, well, quite thoroughly demonised.
It took Phil many, many years to get to where he is now. It took Phil many, many attempts to get to where he is now. It took him many mistakes, some worse than others.

Summary
Missa needed to do this- the augurs had pointed him out specifically, and there was no arguing with a God's calling. That and the sheer might of the Antarctic Empire was something best to be avoided if at all possible, as the crushing blow of a war they would inevitably lose was not something their Emperor wanted to inflict on his subjects.
Missa still found it a little ironic that a priest of the Lady Death was going to be marrying the terror of the south known only as the "Angel of death," but it wasn't a decision he could argue with.
It was worth it. For so many reasons it was worth the sacrifice.
He still couldn't stop shaking.

"I might not have that time Missa." Phil practically spits out. He's angry, Missa can tell. But it doesn't look like it. He wonders when the man had learned to hide his expressions so well...
"Why do you think that?"
Phil turns and stares at him, conflicted feelings fighting behind that strong gaze that Missa's always found himself drowning in. The bird then sighs and his shoulders slump.
"This island is dangerous."
"I know."
Phil reaches for Missa's hand absent-mindedly, "We could die tomorrow Missa."
"I know." Missa interlocks their fingers and squeezes.
Or, Missa and Phil are dealing with a lot, but they have each other.
