Eddie made a strangled disbelieving noise, expression flickering. “You are not apologizing to me right now, for like, feeling a normal way about stuff. I can’t believe you.”
Steve pushed a shaking hand through his hair. His heart rate no longer in his ears meant he felt he could at least think a little more clearly. “Maybe it was the heat. Doesn’t always have to be something messed up, right?”
Eddie gave him a placating nod. “Sure, heat exhaustion is a helluva thing.”
It had been happening a lot recently. The… forgetting. Zonking out. Whatever. He was pretty sure he was just extra exhausted, it had been a few weeks since everything but it might have just been the adrenaline or something finally wearing off. Sometimes it was like he just forgot someone was speaking, or couldn’t remember for a moment what they’d been talking about. Like blinking out of a fog maybe.
It does not get better, in fact, it actually continues to get worse.

“How the fuck can you hate Christmas?” Eddie pipes up as soon as the bell jingles again, signalling that it’s just the three of them once more.
Steve shrugs again and pushes off the counter. It’s not like it’s a secret, the whole him hating Christmas thing. It’s just. It’s kind of embarrassing, is the thing. Something that always tugs at the back of Steve’s mind whenever it comes up in conversation. He knows he had a fucked up childhood, that his parents were subpar at best, but something about even Christmas being sullied - the so called time of love and family spirit - something about admitting to that has always rubbed him up the wrong way. It had taken Robin almost a full bottle of wine to get it out of him and even then it’d still been hard to say the words out loud.

Steve’s shivering. Or maybe he’s trembling, he truthfully isn’t entirely sure himself, but the bag in his hands as they sit on the hood of Eddie’s van for a better view is rustling from the movement. He tries not to consider Eddie reacting poorly, thinking that he’s trying to take this memory he’d shared with him weeks ago and make it their own because he’s not. He wants Eddie to have something tangible of a memory he otherwise can’t hold, that’s all.
He’s also in love with Eddie, but that’s a separate thought.

Summary
It’s not until Spin the Bottle rolls around that things get interesting. He’s not sure who even suggested it, maybe it was him, but it’s fun. Steve loves touch, and he loves all of the people around him, and he hasn’t been able to so much as flirt with anyone since realizing his feelings for Eddie. When he’s sober, maybe he’ll admit he’s anxious and growing desperate to know what Eddie’s lips feel like against his, but that’s a problem for future Steve. Current Steve is just reveling and enjoying his birthday for the first time in as many years as he can remember his birthdays. After a few turns, Eddie spins the bottle and Steve breathes a sigh of relief loud enough that he’s sure Eddie can hear it from his position next to him.

Summary
Four hours and just two drinks between them later, Steve and Eddie find their way back to the van amidst the throng of fellow bar-goers at closing time. Steve’s voice is hoarse from singing, and his feet hurt from dancing, and he’s never felt more alive than he does at this moment.
That’s a lie.
The most alive he’s ever felt is back in the bar, dancing with Eddie when his attempts to wingman for Steve fall flat. It’s not that Eddie’s a bad wingman, Steve just doesn’t find someone that catches his eye— not the way Eddie does. He tries his best not to think too hard about that.
When they reach the van, he settles into the passenger seat and he closes his eyes. He can still see Eddie moving to the beat of a song he most definitely does not recognize, their chests pressing together on a crowded dance floor and Eddie’s fingers gripping his hips tight. Strobe lights bathe them both in shades of pinks and purples and blues and all it would take is one small adjustment, one tiny step forward…

Sure, there are complications-- Eddie's recovery is going to be a long road, and it's not easy to court a guy who's unconscious. They never actually got to have a first date or even talk about their expectations for their new relationship. Eventually they'll have to figure out how to come out to the people close to them about it. But he knows he has Robin in his corner, and Eddie's uncle Wayne is surprisingly accepting, so he's confident they'll get through the bumps in the road. They've dealt with worse, right?
The complication Steve didn't account for? Eddie's got no idea they're together.

Summary
Even though Robin insisted that they were platonic with a capital P, Nancy didn’t buy it. Robin and Steve clearly cared about each other, had countless inside jokes and practically spent all their time together. If they weren’t dating then they definitely would be soon. She figured that Robin was downplaying things to not make things uncomfortable with her considering her history with Steve.
Which was nice of Robin to do but it left a bad taste in her mouth that they weren’t upfront about their relationship. She didn’t want them to have to hide for her sake.

Steve was great with kids. He was always kind to Holly back when they were dating even though she was only a toddler back then. Holly was still obsessed with him. Now she saw him all the time with Max and Dustin, heck he probably spent more time with Mike than she did. He’d be so great with his own children. She could imagine a mini Steve with big poofy hair and large brown eyes sitting atop his shoulders. It was too cute to even think about.
