Erik knew one thing about the story for sure; even if the Capitol created him, he was no one’s property.
Erik Lehnsherr’s last reaping was supposed to pass him by easily - as a mutant orphan protecting his kind in the home, his concerns are mostly about finding a job in the mutantphobic district, keeping the kids safe when he moves out and being charged as an adult for regularly hunting outside of the dome.
Everything changes, however, when Charles Xavier, the son of a victor who killed himself, volunteers to save his sister - and then Erik himself gets reaped.
Trapped in the games that represent everything he hates when his very survival depends on him pretending to tolerate them, Erik is starting to feel more and more like he’s part of something bigger than himself and something he can’t control. And it isn’t engineered only by the Capitol - but by Charles Xavier himself.

“That is not a comforting way to start,” Darwin-- the only one virtually unharmed, except some fresh scarring around his mouth-- says, arms crossing nervously.
Raven is on the verge of tears now too. “What happened?”
They’re wheeling the gurney out now, Charles medically sedated and unable to comfort them, so Erik does his best to be a de-facto-adoptive parent instead. “He is not comatose, he’s been medically sedated to make travel more comfortable.”
“You know they only do that for things like spinal injuries, right—” Hank, bouncing from foot to foot and absently rubbing his bruised jaw, starts.
And Alex, with one arm in a sling and bandaging poking out from under his hoodie, interrupts, “Wait, who did that? Because it sure as shit wasn’t Shaw.”
Horror, red-tinged and heinous, seeps up from the ground and roots Erik to the spot.

Charles Xavier is headmaster to a prestigious school for mutants. Erik Lehnsherr is a mutant terrorist. They play chess on the weekends when they're not trying to actively destroy each other's legacies (or kill the president, or go to space, or recruit various mutants into their cool kid clubs). It's unlikely, and it works, even if neither of them would ever let it slip that they have been seen with the other. Or, even if they leave a lot of things unsaid. Or kind of don't say anything at all, mostly.
It works out. It's a good place to be in, better than before. Right?
Why do they want to hang out, again?
And anyway, what is so wrong with getting tipsy and playing chess with your ex-situationship turned "We Were Literally on the News Together for Terrorism Related Incidents" arch-nemesis? A lot. There's a lot wrong with it, actually.
Charles and Erik drink, play chess, talk about their feelings (oof), and mostly, honestly, argue. There's a lot of arguing.
