Summary
On a hot summer's day, The Captain and Havers enjoy a pleasant lunch (and more!) in the shade in the garden. The Captain plucks up the courage to share his final buried secret with Havers.
"William's T-shirt was stuck to his back. "It is so damned hot." He seemed to wilt a little, put his drink back down, then pulled the t-shirt over his head, displaying a strong broad back to the Captain before laying back down. The Captain came over even hotter as he took in the bare chest beside him; toned, with flat abs; defined and muscular, but natural, not the sort of muscle gained from consciously “working out at the gym” was the phrase he thought he'd heard. Definitely more muscle than he had, but then he had always been slightly small, the Captain reminisced. And William was a farmer’s son; used to manual hard work and probably lifting hay bales or sheep from a young age."

Summary
Redoing this bc it no longer does it justice. Started off as a character study but I got let loose with planning sheets and here we are, Captain randomly deciding to take in 8 evacuees with a catch. 2 of them used as a "what if they were slightly different" thing for Capvers. Honestly I was just trying to see if I could do something like this tbh. Not everyone's cup of tea - kind of a marmite like fic if you get what I mean. Pretty much daily chapters atm but that is subject to change as I want this done and dusted so I can move on to other projects :]. Each chapter between 1-3 thousand words. Peer reviewed as being "too gay", take from that what you will.

Summary
He feels like an idiot, and for a moment he thinks maybe he shouldn’t say anything. There’s a chance that what he’s about to say might disgust Anthony and make him never want to see James again. Maybe he should just be happy that Anthony is alive and well, and maybe James can settle for having a wonderful friendship with him. That wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
But Anthony is smiling almost knowingly, that familiar kindness shining in his eyes, and it gives James courage.
Anthony has never laughed at James before or looked at him with disgust, even in James’ more foolish moments as CO. Even if he is reading this all wrong, he knows Anthony well enough to know that the worst reaction he’ll get is a painfully kind rejection.
OR
The Captain doesn’t die at the Button House VE celebrations and is reunited with Havers.

Summary
Anthony spies a man sitting alone at a table in the corner when he walks in, and the first thing that makes his heart beat a little faster is the silver hair. The second is the moustache.
The man is probably a decade older than Anthony, and he has a handsome jawline, but there are a lot of things wrong too. His eyes are brown, he’s too slim, and he’s a little too tall. He’s also sitting too confidently; he’s too sure of himself. The sweet awkwardness Anthony had been hoping for is noticeably absent.
But he’ll do.
They make eye contact, and Anthony decides to chance it.
He buys the man a drink, but the truth is he doesn’t want to talk very long. Every word the man says reminds Anthony that he’s not the man he really wants.
OR
After the Captain dies, Anthony deals with his grief and desperately tries to find some closure.

Turns out dying is the easy part. Navigating the afterlife with the recently discovered ghost of your former lieutenant is decidedly harder. As old memories are dredged up and new traumas are dealt with, the Captain and Havers get the closure they need (and I very much want).

Summary
The Captain and Havers find comfort in the woods near Button house. Far enough away that they felt almost safe from the Judgmental attitudes of 1940s England.
I calculated it, and the time between the captain's diary entry in the button house archives about Lt Havers coming to Button House and him leaving for North Africa was only two months. Cap fell hard and fast, huh.

Summary
Standing on his step was Anthony Havers. No longer Lieutenant. Captain? Major? Did it matter now that the war was over? No uniform, but rather a faded blue button up shirt with a loose camp collar, slimmer cut trousers, a holdover from fabric rationing, and dark leather shoes, a little careworn. He’d never seen Havers in anything other than a uniform or cricket kit.
James knew he looked awful, but he hadn’t expected to see it register in Havers’ face, the way surprise had subtly shifted to shock and pity. He nearly slammed the door shut in response.
