Penelope saw a glint form in Anticlea’s eyes.
“There’s also our oldest son.” At her words, Laertes smiled, something Penelope could see was forced.
“You are lucky to have been blessed by the gods with a son, Laertes. If he's anything like his father, he will be a fine king,” Icarius replied, seemingly unphased at the tension between the couple. “I would very much like to acquaint myself with your family, if possible.”
“Unfortunately, for all the god’s blessings, our son has been stricken with health issues since childhood. It is unlikely he will be able to take the throne or greet you, great king,” Laertes said, and Penelope could feel him trying to place a lid back onto this topic.
Or, trying to cover up a 'curse' sent by the gods, the royal family of Ithaca attempts to keep the fact that their prince has wings behind closed doors. Fate has decided that Penelope and Odysseus will meet regardless.

Or, Phil, Techno, Wilbur, and Tommy are guardians, magical statues that protect temples and become solid stone when humans aren't around.

“I gathered,” Techno responded. “I don’t want to be doing this either. I prefer to work alone. But, a job’s a job.”
Philza laughed. “Right, because all this is to you is a job, of course. People are getting hurt, can you understand that? Or did the poison they mutated you with damage your empathy, too?” Philza sighed, leaning back a little in his chair. “The only reason I didn’t protest my lord more is that I genuinely want to help protect the city from harm. That’s it.”
Or, Technoblade, a witcher, takes a contract and gets stuck with Philza, the lords advisor, while he tries to hunt a monster down that's been hurting visitors to the city crypt.

(Part of him wanted to be wrong. A deep part he had pushed down, a part that had seen how Phil had filled the empty halls of the castle in a way that hadn’t been done before.)

Grace has mentioned that he is a scientist as well as a teacher to human children. On Erid, only our Elders would step down from their purpose to impart their knowledge on the next generation. Grace must be very old indeed to become a teacher, and to be chosen for this mission.

He wasn’t ready to say it out loud. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But part of him was sure he’d experienced… something. Something worse than being held down, sedated, and then forced into a suicide mission. Something really bad. Something unspeakable.

Six forced his face and voice to stay neutral. “What?”
“I’m not personally escorting them, but my people informed me of a…” Hansen pauses, seemingly looking for information. Six’s gut is always right, and there was a rock settling in the pit of his stomach. “Colt Seavers and Ryland Grace. Who knew Sierra had family?” A cold laugh echoed through the phone. “I’ll see you soon, Six. Family reunion! How exciting.”
The line went dead. Six was still, except for his right hand slowly crushing the phone held to his ear. He would need to get rid of it anyway.
This stupid fucking USB. He wanted to burn it.
Glass crunched in his fist, the phone irreparable. God, he was going to fucking murder Lloyd Hansen.
He brought the phone down, staring at it. The screen had faded to darkness.

The launch happens while Colt is stuck in the hospital. Alone.
At first, he’s annoyed. Confused. Angry, maybe. Mostly scared, if he’s being completely honest with himself. He’s not used to being alone.
Okay, well, he’s been alone before. Duh. Everyone has. He means really alone.
He’s been alone like this before: for eight minutes at birth, for a few weeks being placed apart in the system once, and for the time that Ryland ghosted everyone after being disgraced from academia. But this feels different from even that.
....
It’s been over a year since the fall. Over a year since the launch.Colt is not doing well.
(The Hail Mary ship launches a few days after Colt's accident. A year later, he's still grappling with the guilt and confusion over not being there when whatever happened to his brother happened, when he's thrown back into stunt work for Jody's movie. Oh, and he's being framed for murder.)
